For ultralight backpackers, carrying razor blades instead of knives is fairly common; for myself, I will always carrying a knife but I do like to carry a razor blade in reserve just in case.

I like having a razor for just in case situations.  As a backup if something happens to my knife or for situations where i need a finer edges.
