The IBNS Military Shelter Gets Even More Interesting - Catoma Tarp Syste...


This shelter system is Different! 
Really Really Different!

Recently I put up a video concerning the Catoma IBNS tent, that was part 1.  This is part 2 and the focus is on the tarp system that Catoma developed to go hand in hand with that bug tent.

They call it the Gopher….why?  It’s a play on words sort of thing; the IBNS is also called the Burrow and this is the Gopher.  

Anyways, the company claims that this tarp was designed to work directly with the IBNS.  They also point out that it can be attached to most off-road vehicles which really is a stretch but hey, whatever.  That’s marketing for you.

In this episode, we will be taking a look at the Gopher tarp and will be seeing just how well that it works with the IBNS tent.

This has been a product that caught my attention last year and now that winter is on the way to being over, I went ahead and purchased it and in this episode we are going to take a look at it and I’ll explain how I plan to use it.

A Six Panel Tarp? Why? - Gold Armour 10’ x 10’ Tarp - Ultra Low Budget Tarp

OneTigris Bastion Tarp

Review Pros :

Size of the tarp stored and set-up is great.  This is plenty big and offers a lot of protection.
Excellent materials 
Very lightweight
Plenty of tie off points around the body as well as the top
Excellent color - love the green 
Has offered excellent wind protection with no issues with winds up to 25mph - I believe it could handle more but haven’t had the opportunity to test in such.

One aspect to this tarp that I was worried about was stretching and that’s because it is made from a Silnylon which is notorious for this to happen when it gets wet.  The thing is, not all silynylon variants stretch to the same degree - Whereas the Fjallraven tarp that I recently reviewed was HORRIBLE in this regards, the OT tarp wasn’t bad at all.  It would stretch some but it was relatively minor. By the way, Fjrallven is going back to the drawing board with their tarp and it’s all because of TOGR.  

I spoke of this in detail on Paterson and with my supporters here on YT but in a Nutshell, having a tarp that stretches as bad as the Fjallraven tarp doesn’t make sense - it didn’t to me and it doesn’t to the company and their are committed to providing a better product.  More on this coming soon.


Large easy to utilize tie-off points.  The OT Bulwark tarp features very small tie off points whereas this tarp doesn’t.  The Bulwark was waterproof though….

Review Cons :
Importantly this tarp has been a complete letdown in the waterproof department.  I’ve had so many issues that I suspect that there is some sort of manufacturing issue with this product and I would recommend staying clear from purchasing it.

At the top of the tarp are three tie off points on the other side of those points the tarp features seam tape - unfortunately there are issues with the tape and the tarp leaks from each of these points profusely.  

If it leaked from one I would say that it’s a one-off sort of thing but because every single one of them leak this insinuates the possibility of a wider spread issue.

Based on my experiences with this tarp, the price I paid on Amazon makes sense but the $100 price on the OneTigris web site is crazy expensive…that’s if the tarp didn’t leak.  But it does and for certainly now that we know this product has problems, it isn’t worth the Amazon price either. 

For the same full retail price, you can get a 10 x 10 tarp from AquaQuest - a tarp that’s double treated with silicone and PU, it will feature a 5,000MM waterproof rating.

The included guylines aren’t very good.

Fjallraven Abisko Tarp - Details

What it is : It has been some time since I posted my preview of this tarp - since then I have continued to test it and have done so in a variety of conditions ranging from warm summer days and nights to cold and windy winter ones.

This is the 10x10’ Fjallraven Abisko Tarp and unfortunately this product is simply not worth the rather high cost.

After a great deal of testing I can share with you both the cons as well as the pros of what I consider to be an expensive disappointment. 

Originally I purchased this Tarp from the Ray Mears site as it wasn’t available in the USA.  Over time that has changed and this tarp is available on Amazon and it can be found at other sites as well.  Not that I would recommend that you purchase it but as an FYI.

Green Elephant Adjustable Poles Review

Review Pros :
Excellent quality poles
Have heard up to all sorts of conditions year after year without any problem - they have held up extremely well in rain, ice, snow, and wind
Can support a lot of weight, up to 50lbs but that requires a great deal of tightening. 
Shorter poles can support up to 35lbs
Smooth telescoping 
Highly adjustable
Easy to set up and breakdown
Lightweight 
Very versatile 
Universal tip will fit any grommet
The rubber caps do a great job of allowing the poles to be used up against tarp or tent material without causing sort of damage

Review Cons :
the company says these are waterproof and I have no idea what they are talking about as these poles will fill with water if you are using them with a tarp if they are exposed to rain.  The poles will fill with water and when you break them down will act like a squirt gun.  Because the water is on the inside, it takes forever for them to dry.

Does this cause any rusting?  I do not know, I haven’t seen any discolored water coming from these as i continue to use them and they continue to operate without issue even though I have used these year after year. The company claims these are rustproof and so far this seems accurate. 

The top rubber pole covers will eventually dry out and will rip off
The shorter silver versions aren’t that useful as they don’t do anything that the longer version can’t do and are almost the same price. 
Pricey - and depending on what you are setting up, you may need more than just 2 poles.  You might need 6 or even 8.
I mentioned previously that these poles can hold up to 50lbs but that’s with a great deal of tightening.  If you have them that tight you may struggle with getting them loose
I don’t remember specifically why as it has been so long since I threw them away, but I didn’t like the storage bag that was included with these poles.

This is the Smallest Tent I Have EVER Seen - NatureHike Spire Trekking P...


I've never seen a tent this small before and I'm not sure if I should laugh at it or get angry.

What I have today is a trekking pole tent from a company known as NatureHike.  This is a company who makes a ton of tents ranging from 3 season to even 4 season tents.

Thoughts and Impressions : 

Weight : 3.2lbs for the tent without any trekking poles means this is still a somewhat heavy tent.  If you are carrying trekking poles anyways then great, this tent could be of a benefit. If you are having to carry poles for this tent specifically and you normally wouldn't carry them, then this is a heft system for what it is. 

Size : This tent is small and I would say only for users around 5’3” - There is a picture of a man sleeping in the tent on the NH website and you can see that his legs aren’t even straight in the tent.
