Varusteleka Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 Knife - Review

You all have seen this knife in action for a while now and here comes the review!  This is the Varusteleka Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 with leather sheath.

...

Link : https://www.varusteleka.com/en/product/terava-jaakaripuukko-110-w-leather-sheath/33531?ref=knives

Other Knives Link :

https://www.varusteleka.com/en/group/knives/1197

Price : 54.99 USD with the sheath - $30 with no SHEATH

Leather Sheath – plastic insert – double folded leather

Very strong

Excellent seams and stitching

Snap retention – when walking around camp, it doesn’t have to be snapped – tight enough to keep it secure

Leather belt loop

Very ridged

High scandi grind

Rubber texturize handle

Tacky.  Doesn’t slide around – tough, has lasted my months of use.

Wet or dry, very secure

I like the palm swell

Feels awesome

Full tang

Lanyard hole - Pummel

Sharp spine – finger nail

Fine quality carbon steel, traditional Finnish puukko blade profile with a slight drop point and a practical grind guarantee a razor sharp knife straight out of the box, and it's easy to maintain too. This is the shorter model, blade length 110 mm.

The Jääkäri (or Jaeger for you foreign devils, the name derives from the backbone infantry of the Finnish army) is nothing fancier than a very simple, very practical puukko knife. The Jääkäri is a buddy you can trust to get the job done and you don´t need to be too careful either, these are built for use.

Specs

Steel: Carbon Steel 80CrV2 59 HRC

Blade Length: 4.3" or 110 mm

Blade Height: 1" or 26 mm

Blade Thickness: .157" or 4 mm

Blade Edge: 23 Degree Scandi with micro secondary bevel

Spine Edge: 90 Degree

Handle: Full Tang

Handle Material: Direct Molded Textured Rubber

Overall Length: 9.5" or 240 mm

Weight (w/out sheath) 6.17 oz. or 175 g.

Blade

Traditional and proven functional Finnish puukko profile. The thickness of 4 mm makes this a bit more robust than most old timey traditional Finnish puukkos. The grind is a scandi grind with a tiny secondary bevel, truly the most common type of puukko grind.

…..

These knives sale VERY quickly so you will need to move quickly if you want one.
Do I recommend it?  Absolutely!  It is everything that a good forest knife needs to be.

Sharp.  Simple.  Rugged.  Inexpensive.

If this version is sold out at the time that you are watching it, I have included a link to the other knives that are for sale.  There are numerous versions including longer ones which you may want to consider.

This is one of the most impressive knives that I have seen and used in a long time.  For the money, I’m not sure if I can think of a better product that would compare to it.  In my book, this knife is trust worthy and I would equally consider it just as good as any Mora!  That says a lot!

Out of the box it does through sparks and mine has done very well but I have seen comments from others whose spine has been slightly rounded.

Prandi 3.011.C Axe "German type" - Review

Luke has been on a roll with axe reviews lately so here is another one!  This is the review of the very budget friendly, very impressive Prandi 3.011.C Axe "German type" - Review

Link : https://www.a-prandi.it/en/shop/3-011-c-axe-german-type.html

Cost : €38.30 Euros - 40.57 US + Shipping Which is around $20.00 or so.
“Pran –Di”

Model : 3.011.10.CH

Stats :

Head Weight :

1000gr / 2,25lb

Carbon Steel 1045

Total weight : 3lbs 8oz

Only the blade is hardened, 3 cm. Long.

Hardness value: 51/56 HRC

Extremely narrow blade which goes DEEP into whatever this strikes.  It’s beautiful!  If you’re a blade/axe drok like myself, you will likely agree.  When you show this off to fellow axemen, they all say the same thing!  Wow!

Handle :

60cm / 23,65in Hickory – Custom.  Fat but yet man-sized.

Treated with wax or water paint.  The wooden handle is pressed into the eye and it is fixed by the wooden wedge and the ring steel wedge.

Long Shoulder Hunters Axe Handle.  That is what I call it anyways, every region seems to have a different term for different axe handles.  This sort of handle is also referred to as the California Framer, or the Scout, or the House axe handle.

Typically long shoulders like this go with splitters but it’s not entirely uncommon to see.

Axe "German Type", carbon steel C45/1045, with polished and hardened blade. Varnished ash or Hickory handle, Tampoprinted, protector and lace made of genuine leather.

Made in Italy

Axe "German type", carbon steel C45/1045, with polished and hardened blade. Varnished ash or Hickory handle, Tampoprinted, protector and lace made of genuine leather.

Review :

Shaving Sharp = Scary Sharp!

This is what I call a wood-worker axe; is still an easy-to-use tool but still maintains an angry bite. I’ve brought it camping, split through my winter wood pile, and cleared some Birch in the backyard and I still expect to find many more uses for this exemplary piece of craftsmanship. It works very well, holds a great edge, and I bet that it will continue to do so for a very long time. This thing might even outlive me. Looks great, feels great, and can’t complain about that pricing. Exceeded my expectations, to say the least.

This axe's compact size bestows substantial versatility, allowing it to be used as both a lightweight work axe and a dependable packing tool. The widened blade allows this axe to perform exceptionally well as a cutting tool, while still being able to handle moderate splitting work.

If you’re looking for a great workhorse of an ax, look no further. I’ve been using this axe for the past 4 months and have found it to be an exceptional tool.

heavy enough for all around use and about the right size to put on a pack horse. I like it, the handle is put on right, no worry about it coming loose, and very good steel.

Cons :

The handles are varnished and it’s SLICK!  Almost to the point of being dangerous.  I’ve had a hard time keeping this in my hands which means that I am going to do some work on this handle. Now that I’m done with my initial testing with this axe, I am going to correct this issue and there are multiple ways to go about this.

You could wrap it, you could work with treatments such as linseed oil, or there are low tech solutions;

Pine tar, rosin, dirt on your hands, etc.

Teton Sports Mountain Adventurer 4000 Backpack - Review

Today Luke is reviewing the TETON Sports Mountain Adventurer 4000 Backpack.

Link Amazon :

https://www.amazon.com/Sports-Adventurer-Ultralight-Backpacking-Mountaineering/dp/B016ZXEDCQ

Teton Web Site :

http://www.tetonsports.com/Backpacks/UltraLight/mountain-adventurer4000.htm#.WDnP9qOZNTY

Price : 137.86
Weight : 5.25 lbs (with tarp poncho) 4 lbs (without tarp poncho)
Color : Black with Orange Accents : The black pack is sharp looking, with nice color trim

Stats :

Space : 4000 Cubic Inches / 66 Liters

Dimensions : 27” x 12” x 10”

Torso : Adjustable 15" - 20"

7 total pockets

Includes a full size poncho : combo poncho/rain fly/emergency shelter

The pack is water resistant but not waterproof.  Luckily they include a full poncho!  One funny thing that I noticed with the amazon page; there is a picture of a hiker in the pouring rain with the pack getting soaked…even though this pack isn’t waterproof and a poncho is included.

Initial Thoughts :

If you are accustomed to how I do things, I regularly do what I call are previews.  Essentially a preview is an overview of a product followed by micro-review.  This micro-review includes my thoughts and feelings about the product while the T&E phase is on going.

So far, I have had this pack out for 4 overnight trips and I have roughly 35 trail miles with it. One of those outings was an Overnight Trip which you will find on this channel and it is called the Cliffside Hammock Camp.  That is coming soon. When on this trip, I posted pictures of this pack on Facebook and I noticed a great deal of positive comments about Teton!  They have a very good reputation, for many good reasons.

This pack is described by Teton as Ultralite; it is NOT ultralight, not even close but it is very comfortable.

One thing that I have noticed is that the waste belt rides a bit high.  That’s not a negative, just an observation.

The waste belt is very comfortable and adjustable.  My waste is 32” and it will go down it 28”

How does it handle weight : So far so good.  The heaviest that I have carried in this pack was around 40lbs and it handled it all just fine.

Good size belt pocket.  Just one though.  That is rather interesting as two is common.

Very versatile pack; tons of ways to lash additional gear to the outside of the pack.  To, above the lid and bottom.

Good size sleeping bag compartment but I have found that it’s difficult to access it.  The zipper is very close to the zipper cover flap and that makes it difficult to open.  Is this a deal killer?  No, but improvements need to be made here.  It will definitely slow you down.

Hydration compatible but you can carry bottles as well.  The best of both worlds.

Overall I am impressed with this pack and again, I’m impressed with Teton Sports.  Great quality for the money, tons of features.

Snugpak Hammock Quilt - Review

Luke reviews the Snugpak Hammock Quilt!

Links :

Snugpak : http://www.proforceequipment.com/product-details.php?id=500&catid=

Amazon : https://www.amazon.com/Snugpak-Hammock-Quilt-Travelsoft-Insulation/dp/B0167IYLJY

Price $50 on Snugpak Web site and amazon

Weight : 39oz

- Made with MicroDiamond Fabric with a Paratex™ Antibacterial treatment

- The Travelsoft™ filling gives great insulation and comfort, reflecting and trapping heat – It’s a polyster fiber.

- Complete with Compression Stuff Sack

- Weight: 39oz / 1100g

- Available in Olive

DIMENSIONS

Length 71"/180cm

Width 43"/110cm

Packsize 9" x 9" / 23 x 23cm

Due to the versatility of the hammock insulation systems, the wide variety of applications and variations in camp set up it is difficult to establish an overall comfort temperature for these items. As a general reference the insulation used is Travelsoft with the similar fill weights to our two season sleeping bags. We would strongly recommend you experiment with your own set up and gradually build up to more extreme temperatures until you are confident of the overall thermal performance.

It's a dark green, with maybe some brown tint to it. It has a nice diamond weave, and overall is pretty nice looking.

Wings are meant to go underneath you mainly to keep it in place, not to add warmth.

Foot box is big, able to fit my buddies size 13 feet.

I’ve tested this down to 37 and was fine but I could tell that I wouldn’t be able to push it much further unless you add an under quilt.  That was with my fleece jacket on and my thermals. And closed cell foam pad.

With a good underquilt you could take this down my estimate of 27.

I will continue to update you all on how it handles temps now that fall is here.

For the price, there is no other top quilt on the market. The next closest competition is from ENO, the spark, and is about $100, more than twice as expensive, and is also rated to only 50 degrees.

Excellent price

Is this quilt the best on the market? Will this be the last quilt you ever own? No, not really. However this is still an absolutely amazing deal for a quilt, and should last for years if cared for

Down quilts work better but are expensive. this will serve the same function and has anti-microbial fabric treatment which is a plus.

Snugpak Tropical Hammock - Review

Today Luke is reviewing the Snugpak Tropical Hammock.

….

Link :

Snugpak : http://www.proforceequipment.com/product-details.php?id=113&catid=

Amazon : https://www.amazon.com/SnugPak-61640-Snugpak-Tropical-Hammock/dp/B001B8C2VU

Price : $31.99 of Amazon. $50 on Snugpak Web Site

Weight : 21oz

Colors : Olive and Coyote Brown

Features :

•       Quality material used to make all Pro force products
•       Tested in the field and used in the toughest environments
•       100 percent designed in the USA
•       9 feet by 4 feet 5 inches wide
•       400 pound weight capacity
•       Includes suspension attachment system
•       Made from lightweight, extremely strong parachute material

Triple nylon stitched seams for durability and strength

Manufactured from lightweight but extremely strong parachute nylon material, triple nylon stitched seams, folds away into its own practical stuff bag, supplied with heavy duty carabiners for easy set up. The Tropical Hammock also comes with a Suspension Attachment System to make setting up and securing around trees quicker and easier. With two steel carabiners for attaching the hammock connects very easily to the Suspension Attachment System.

Review :

Pros – Very strong, can support big guys.
Long and wide.
Fair lightweight
Inexpensive compared to the competition.
Includes suspension system
Trip stitched
Quick deployment

Cons –

Could be lighter weight by replacing carabiners for lighter versions.
Suspension system will bite into the trees unless you take steps to prevent that from happening.
Thoughts – This is a good quality, inexpensive hammock.  Easy to setup, easy to pack away.  The suspension system is very basic and not the best but it works.  I would advice bringing additional paracord when you are out with this hammock to make sure that you can find a good location to throw your hammock up at.

Assembly/disassembly of handle and axe takes less than a minute.

Powder coated for durable, tough finish.

Handle includes:

•       Breakdown Handle with paracord wrapped hand grip.

•       Bolts

Allen Key for assembly/disassembly

Review :

What I love about this is that with very little room being taken up in your pack you have a very versatile tool.  With one setup you have a hatchet.  With another you have an axe.

It’s very easy to put it together and very simple to break it down.

I’m glad that the cotton bag is included but I don’t trust it for my own personally carrying.  I will move this entire kit over to zippered bag which will completely secure each component of my axe system.  You wouldn’t want to take a chance of something falling out of this bag.

Review :

This is another terrific product from the company known as Savotta!  It’s built to be tough, military grade while being functional.  It also looks awesome in my opinion.

The pack is small but it can hold a lot!  For the last couple of months this has served me while day hiking and with my bushcraft overnight adventure.

I love the external features which allow for the carry of a rifle; attached my 22lr and didn’t notice that it was there.

The waist belt is simple but effect and can be wrapped around the pack when not needed.  Also it can be used to help secure your external loadout.

Battlbox Mission 20 - Unboxing and Discussion

Battlbox Mission 20 Box; the unboxing and discussion begins now.
...

Link : https://battlbox.com

Battlbox :  This is the dominating survival subscription box if there is one who can hold that title.  Over the years as Susan and I have taken a look at these type of monthly boxes, there is one that our viewers have been not only asking about but vouching for and that would be the Battlbox.

Each Box is a mission: For example this is Mission #18 which is all about fishing.  You may be wondering if every box

Only for the USA and the 50 States.

4 tiers :

Basic : 24.99  Receive 4-7 hand selected items from survival tools and manuals to emergency supplies and EDC gear.

Advanced : 49.99 Receive 6-10 hand-selected items. Additions includes 2-3 higher value items such as tactical pens, camp stoves, water purification and more.

Pro : 99.99 For the serious professional. Receive 7-11 items. Additions includes 1-2 kickass products such as tents, survival watches and tactical belts.

Pro Plus : 149.99 For the elite collector & big spender. KOTM included in each box, blade brands like Kershaw, Spyderco, Mantis, 5.11, Gerber, SOG, Buck, Fox, and many more.

If you have signed up before 8PM EST on the 3rd of each month, your BattlBox will ship by the 9th of that month, and should arrive no later than the 15th. If you sign up after 8PM EST on the the 3rd, your Battlbox shipment will begin on the following month. For example, if you subscribe on APRIL 2nd, your BattlBox will ship by APRIL 9th. If you subscribe on APRIL 9th, your first Battlbox will ship by MAY 9th.

Yes! It is almost impossible to include enough “cool” gear in each box for the entire thing to be themed, but certain products in each box WILL be themed each month for a different survival or tactical scenario. For us, this is one of the most fun parts of creating each box, and we look forward to sending some of the stuff we’ve found!

The values of the products are all right on par with what I was able to find online.  Good for you guys.  My advice to the company is to keep it real when it comes to the value of the gear that you offer.  It’s easy to add a few dollars on there and you will get busted.  If you list the value, people will check on it.  Countless sub boxes do this and we have busted many of them for going over the top.

The first thing that hit when I opened these boxes is that these are serious monthly subscription boxes.  The gear, the products are all name brand, high quality products and there is no cheap chinese products.

The biggest down fall that we have seen with monthly subscription boxes is that they pack into these boxes a ton of inexpensive chinese junk; that is not the case here with the battlboxes. When you get high quality products you feel like you are getting your monies worth and when you don’t it’s natural to feel like you are getting screwed.

Battlbox has a huge following and a very active forum which I enjoyed spending some time.  One cool thing about the forum is that subscribers can buy, sell and trade unwanted gear if there is something that they don’t need.  This is an awesome function to the site.

1. While being relatively compact and being powered by only one battery, the output is 2500 lumen, and that’s a lot.
2. Build in charger, standard micro-usb socket.
3. A nice present package, a high quality USB adapter with respectable 2A output.
Premium Packing – It feels like you are about to open it up to find a very nice product.

Pros :
Excellent fit and finish.  Very good quality feel to the entire package and product.
The flashlight resembles the Baton series a lot – it is just much larger. I thing the size is optimal to hold in the hand – not too tiny, not too big.
massive silicone cover which feels like it will keep the water out.  I would prefer to see a magnetic charger port but this is good.  Magnetic charging port is great, this is good.  There is a good feeling of the cover setting into place which is nice.  Better than most charging port covers.
The socket is being lit with red light while charging, and green while the charging is complete. You can also use it while the flashlight is on
Large Olight 26550 battery which is larger and offers better performance than my personal favorite battery type, the 18650
When it comes to the beam, there are no artifacts.  Nice throwing power and flooding.
Glow in the dark o ring near the deflector.
There is a low light indictor which turns red to warn you of low power.
Convenient to charge in your car.
Blue bezel looks very nice.
Feels good in the hand.  Good texture.  Doesn’t sleep.
Can use the light and charge it at the same time
Cons :
The battery is a proprietary Olight 26550 battery so you will not be able to go out and purchase one of these from many sources.
You can use other 26650 batteries but you will not be able to recharge them and from what I have heard they will not be able to power the flashlight on turbo mode.  Luckily additional batteries can be purchased for $17 each.
While I like the side switch it is easy to turn this one while in your pocket.  Luckily you can lock the flashlight to prevent accidental activation.
step down after 2 minutes to 800 lumens
Naturally it gets warm when running on high.
It is a roller.
No pocket clip

Propper Rifle Case 36" - Review

Today Luke is reviewing the Propper Rifle Case 36".

Link :  https://www.propper.com/bags/gun-cases/proppertm-36-rifle-case.html

Price : $70 on the Propper web site and Amazon

Colors : Black Coyote Olive

Soft gun case

Protect your rifle with the long, padded Rifle Case. MOLLE webbing on the outside offers room for extra storage and accessories, and the large pouch can carry ear and eye protection or ammo.

·              MOLLE compatible webbing for customization

·              Padded on all sides for increased protection

·              Locking zippers

·              Dual exterior pockets sized to fit an 8x12 Pistol Case

·              Dual zippers can accommodate a lock

·              Internal retention system to secure single rifle or shotgun

·              Padded adjustable shoulder strap

·              12.5" H x 36" W x 4" D

·              slotted flap

Propper also offers a 44" model for $89.99.

The case is fully padded and held up very well during abuse at the range with no concerns for contents during transport, including optics. Another feature that I found useful was the internal retention system - slotted corners and Velcro straps. The lighter contrasting color of the interior was also useful in low light and just in general for finding items that often make their way into an end user's rifle case. I found this to be an excellent case and would highly recommend it.

The lighter colored fabrics allow for putting up and getting out the gun in low light situations

British Mosquito Tent - Setup and Preview

It's Military Surplus Wednesday and Luke has the British Mosquito Tent!

Link : https://www.varusteleka.com/en/product/british-mosquito-tent-surplus/24666

Price : $28

Weight : 81.2oz / 5lbs / 2301.9g / 2.3kg

A stand-alone insect net. Meant for British field cots, but nothing stops you from throwing a regular kip mat inside. Modern British army surplus, so we're talking about quality stuff for a low price.

Not much to say - you get the complete set needed to erect this and a personal mosquito net too. Measurements on the ground level about 200 x 70 cm, but at 30 cm about 180 x 60 cm. You can throw this on top of a standard field cot and secure it with the provided velcro straps. Weight for the whole package is 1,8 kg.

Used and intact. Can't promise these are totally free of rips or tears, as we really can't be arsed to check each and every one of them individually. The few we did check were in very nice shape and you'll probably get one like that too.

Free Standing

Zipped Entry

1 Cot Mounted Mosquito Net

2 Sets Of GRP Rod Sections

4 Pins

Travel Bag

2'8" x 6', 3' center height.

Olive Drab color

I think this would make for a really cool and really functional system when combined with a tarp setup.  You would roll a Basha tarp right in with the tent.

Very battery efficient.  With a good quality 10,000mah battery bank you can easily get 6-8 hours of light.

Very long cords, easy to daisy chain them together.

Very good amount of light.

Cons :

Doesn’t seem to be 340 lumens bright.  $250 maybe.

Battlbox Mission 19 - Unboxing and Discussion

You all wanted more Battlbox so here you go!  This is the Mission 19 Box!

Go! Outfitters Go Camping Hammock w/ Cinch System – Review

Luke is here with the review of the Go! Outfitters Go Camping Hammock with Cinch Buckle Suspension System.

Links :

Go Outfitters :

http://go-outfitters.com/collections/hammocks-and-accessories/products/the-go-camping-hammock?variant=2036869315

Amazon :

https://www.amazon.com/Go-Outfitters-GCHBK-GO-Hammock/dp/B01788M5FE

Price : $100 with out cinch suspension system.  $130 with the Suspension on the go outfitters web site

$87.40 on amazon for just the hammock. Comes with rope and carabiner if you don’t get the suspension system.

Weight : 58.9oz for the entire system – Hammock, stacks, lines and suspension system.

14.8 for the suspension system straps

44.2oz for the hammock with stakes and lines

Colors : Back, gray, forest green

It’s so long and wide that you can sleep virtually side ways in it which means that you are almost completely flat.  The way that it was designed also means that you can  easily sleep on your side.

11' x 64”

1st hammock in the world to feature our exclusive fabric tensioners that I invented. These manage loose fabric that occurs with larger hammocks.

Material; 70D nylon, 400 lb. weight limit.

Pros :

Very strong, nicely made system

Very long Suspension straps – 15 feet each - 1" wide tree straps

Cinch system works incredibly well and makes setting up the hammock very quick and easy.

Very large hammock, big enough for two people.

These straps and cinch are awesome and easy to adjust! The straps are twice as thick as any other hammock straps I have ever used! The rope on the cinch buckles is 1/8" Amsteel which is crazy strong, other companies only use 7/16" rope. I am confident that these will literally last my entire life! I had another set from a competitor and the thinner straps could slip through the buckle.

Yes, the fabric is breathable, which helps keep the user cool and prevents sweating. It is also is a wicking fabric, which in hotter weather, can actually pull moisture away from the body to the outside of the fabric were it can evaporate. When moisture evaporates, it has a cooling effect!

The material is tightly weaved which prevents mosquitoes from biting through the material on the bottom of the hammock.  That isn’t the case with all hammocks.

Very comfortable

Included ridgeline

Cons :

Heavy System.

Stuff sack is very small.  Almost too small in my opinion.

Not a huge fan of the quick lacing but it’s growing on me.

Very lightweight

Extremely breathable – keep your feet dry

Fast on and off

The collar around the ankle is extremely comfortable and the material is silky smooth.  It feels amazing.

The tongue does a good job of keep dirt and debris from entering the shoe.

Took time to break them in.

Cons :

Belt Loops / Zipper Pull

Review :

I really like these shorts! I love the pockets, the typical cargo packets and a zipper pocket underneath it. The pockets are mesh. No snap on these shorts, rather a button. Zipper has a wide clasp.

I like these enough where I will order a second pair.

Battlbox has a huge following and a very active forum which I enjoyed spending some time.  One cool thing about the forum is that subscribers can buy, sell and trade unwanted gear if there is something that they don’t need.  This is an awesome function to the site.

Review :

This has become a staple item within my fire kit.  Before I began testing this out, I pegged this to be somewhat of gimmick but folks, that was my mistake.  I’m about as experienced of an outdoorsman that there is and I love this tool and that is what it is. A valuable tool! This is purchase that I wouldn’t regret as it’s incredibly simple and incredibly useful.

I’ve used to get my fires going, I’ve used it to bring my fires back to life, I’ve used this to create smokey burns to get rid of bugs.  I have used this to focus heat to boil my water faster.

Buy it!
