What I have here today is a very lightweight sleeping bag quilt that I've already begun testing out and I can tell you all that I'm very impressed.

Travelsoft Insulation - retains heat even when wet - easily washable
Treatment :
The outer shell and the inner lining has been treated with a Paratex antibacterial treatment - this discourages the growth of bacterial which means you don’t have to wash the blanket as often as you would with similar products.
Temperature rating :
The company claims that the blanket is dual rated for 45F and 36F.
I’m not entirely sure what this means exactly and they don’t state - my advice is to use this blanket with regular clothing - socks, pants, shirt, with temps down to 55f. At 55F and above most people are going to be comfortable unless you are someone who runs cold. You will also need a good r-value sleeping pad for cold weather camping to be comfortable.

Over the last couple of years there has been a trending line of packable blanket products that have taken the camping / backpacking world by storm.

My Testing : I’ve been testing this product out since the spring and have been able to use this in temps down to 38f.
With warm clothing you can use this down 40f or even lower. With that being said, for lower temps a good sleeping pad with an higher r rating will be needed or if in a hammock, a good underquilt will be required.
Talking about clothing, at 40f, you’ll likely want a long sleeve shirt, some thermals, good socks, and hat. If you run cold, you might even want a jacket. Review Pros : Very good quality especially for the money - no issue when it comes to the construction Perfectly Suited for summer time use. Very warm with temps down to 50F Insulation does a good job of lofting Quilt materials are comfortable against the ski, silky. Weight is very reasonable for an $85 quilt with synthetic insulation Quilt is compressible - packs up well. Looks awesome (subjective) Versatile as you are able to cover up as much as you like or uncover as needed. Can be used in a hammock or on the ground Foot box is warm and comfortable.
Review Cons : The Nylon Stuff sack that comes with this quilt is close to being complete garbage. While the size is good the compression straps and the related hardware is of the poorest quality. The straps themselves come loose and I have given up on using them. The hardware holds tension but as soon as you take the tension off, the straps will come out of the hardware. If the back closures are in place, this is going to be tight for larger individuals. Luckily for most people since this is a warmer weather quilt won’t have to worry about even fooling with the closures. Speaking of the closurers, if they are in place, it can be difficult to get into and out of the quilt.
Summary : For the money, this is a really good warm weather quilt. Works great in a hammock or on the ground, the overall quality is very good.
Make sure to check the measurements to ensure that it is going to work for you.
Storage bag pretty much sucks….but gets the job done.

What it is : Manufactured for the U.S. Firefighters Forestry Service by Tennier Industries, this is what we call a tapered style sleeping bag with a mummy hood. This shape gives you the ability to open it up fully with its wrap around zipper to use as a blanket and allow extra room if needed. It was designed to keep firefighters warm in a variety of temperatures during field fire operations and is also reversible to yellow for safety visibility. Tennier uses Clo Values and it is estimated this bag to be about 30 degrees. I’ve mentioned already that this sleeping bag was built to military specifications and it features a NSN numbers; that stands for NATO Stock Number or National Stove Number - is a 13-digit numeric code, identifying all the 'standardized material items of supply' as they have been recognized by all NATO countries.
What’s the military connection?
Back in the early 80’s, this bag was adopted by the US Forestry Service - in 1981 it was adopted by the US military and was entered into the NSN federal catalog.
This sleeping bag is from 1980 and if you can locate the military specific version, it obviously doesn’t feature the same colors but the overall design is the same.
Some sellers will confuse the military version of this bag with the intermediate bag from the MSS; that isn’t correct. They are different bags.
TheSportsmansGuide is a good example of this; that site….half of what they state about their products is flat out wrong.
They are selling this bag from $130 and that’s crazy high for what this bag is.
Again, this is not the intermediate bag from the MSS, it doesn’t have the snaps needed to connect to the military system.

Variants To Be Aware Of : When it comes to these liners, you are going to find one of 3 variants out there;
- Military Surplus - official products used by soldiers Reproductions - companies who make an identical copy of the original design - they may make this in colors and camp patterns that weren’t originally offered but the design is virtually the same.
- Styled Liners - This is where a company takes the basics of the liner and have made serious alterations to them. They may call it improved, call it a tactical poncho liner and so on. These products are merely based upon the original liner…..they are “styled.”
Cost : A good condition Woobie is going to run around $40. If you are purchasing military surplus, make sure to confirm condition as these have been used all around the world and it’s easy to get one that is in rough condition. Ask the seller questions and ask to see pictures if buying used.
Design : Designed to be intentionally thin for lightweight, no-bulk packing.
How Does it Attach to a Poncho? Using the tie cords at the corners, they are tied through the grommets on the ponchos.

Materials : Quilted nylon with a polyester filling. It is attached to the poncho by means of integral lengths of material which are looped through the poncho's eyelets.
History and Versions : The poncho liner has been around for a long time and there are a number of military versions.
Poncho liners were first used by the U.S. military in the Vietnam War. They gained the nickname "woobie" later; that term is conjectured to have derived from the name for a child's security blanket in the 1983 movie Mr. Mom.
From what I have read, the US Poncho Liner was first fielded in 1962 to special forces troops in Vietnam. It consists of two layers of quilted nylon encasing a polyester batting. There were tie-cords on the corners and side that could be tied through matching grommets on rain ponchos. They measured 62 x 82 inches. The intent was to field an item which was lighter & faster drying than the standard-issue Army Wool Blanket, which had essentially been rendered obsolete in the wet and tropical environment of Vietnam.
The first ones were Olive Drab on both sides & the earliest models featured squared corners.
Until the USMC produced their own Digital Woodland Pattern, most poncho liners were produced with the same pattern on both sides. The Marines decided to field one with Woodland Pattern on one side & a solid Coyote Color on the other.
Most recently, there have been models produced & issued in the Army's Universal Combat Pattern, the USAF's Environmental Camouflage Pattern, and Multicam/Scorpion II/etc. Also, some models have a zipper that goes around the edges.
Summary : I continue to love the Woobie Blanket, it’s a great piece of kit that I use on & off all year around. In the summer on hot nights I will use it all by itself instead of a sleeping bag and it works great! I can stay comfortable with regular clothing down to 50f.
In the colder months, I will use them to layer in my sleeping bag for additional warmth. I’ll bring it along with me just in case I need extra warmth & I’ll even use it as a pillow.
Speaking of cold conditions, a Woobie by itself is not enough of an insulation layer to keep you warm. It’s a VERY thin blanket; it’s not the same as a wool blanket, a quilt or a sleeping bag.

Price : This is going to vary greatly; you can find used military surplus for around $40, new is around $90. Those are common prices but you can find swings all over the net. I purchased mine 7 years ago for around $20.

Excellent for warmer weather and early fall trips.
Very versatile kit - 40f is my rating for this kit as is but there is enough room to add additional layers; sleeping bag liner, sleeping bag or an additional blanket. A Woobie works great inside of this kit. It doesn’t take much and this is a 10F sleep system.
You can put a sleeping pad inside of the cover under the blanket and linen.
Bulky but for car camping and short distances, it makes sense.
Good compression straps.
Great for emergency use - throw one in the car for winter and you have a valuable piece of gear just in case of an emergency.
Deploys quickly
Good fit for the majority of users.
Easy to pack up
It saved us time and made inspection much easier, so we just unrolled them at night and slept in that.
Easy to store.
Decent amount of space for the shoulders and legs.
Works great on the ground with a sleeping pad or on a cot by itself. It’s thick enough to block a good amount of cold air from underneath.
Good weather resistance - wind and rain. Not waterproof but can handle some moisture before wetting through.
Easy to take apart and wash what you need to.
Because of the overall design these make great sleeping bag rolls for not only adults but kids as well. It’s a super inexpensive way to gear up for a child or someone who doesn’t camp all that much. As a kid I would have been thrilled to have something like this!
One of these, a sleeping pad and they are set for most of the year.
Review Cons :
If purchasing used, be prepared to wash and possibly repair. Replacing buttons is common.
These are military surplus items and there is a possibility of the military surplus smell. It’s unique to surplus and luckily it does go away with enough use.
Mine was fairly strong when I got it in 7 years ago but it’s completely gone.

Taller and Larger individuals will have some problems here; Too tall and it won’t cover you properly, too wide and it won’t cover you properly. My tallest buddy is 6’3” and 250lbs and he has no issues with his. I would say around 300lbs and this would be tight.

To sum up this review, this is a great product but like most things it may not be for everyone. If you don’t mind the size though it’s a versatile piece of kit that’s still fairly inexpensive to find…..but who knows how much longer that will be for.

This is the Carinthia Grizzly Sleeping Bag Liner and when it comes to adding roughly 10 degrees to your sleeping system, in my opinion this is a no brainer.
The quality is top notch, the temp. rating is excellent, it’s a versatile product that can be added to any sleeping bag to create very low temp sleep systems.
You can even use this all by itself, with blankets and even poncho liners.

Their prices are awesome especially for Carinthia products. From the Company : “This extremely soft and lightweight fleece sleeping bag uses the finest firbre currently available on the market. For ventilation, open the zipper at the bottom or open the bag up completely and use it as a blanket. Ideal for cabin use or as a liner inside a second sleeping bag making the main bag about 5°C warmer. Trapezoidal foot section and draw cord on the hood.”
My use : I’ve been using this product for a good part of the summer and currently in the fall and have used it in a number of different ways;
By itself and with other insulation layers.
I’ve used it in a hammock, in conjunction with down blankets, us military poncho liners, and sleeping bags; very versatile liner. Warmest temp was around 65F, coldest 36F.
I will continuing to use this product throughout the winter and if I feel there is a need for an additional video on this, I will make one.

Temp Rating : This is going to be very, very subjective as everyone is different when it comes to temperature and what they find comfortable.
For myself, it has kept me warm down to 50F while wearing clothing; shirt, socks and pants. I tend to run hot.
For Susie, it has kept her warm down to around 60 and she runs cold.
Keep in mind that this is a 1lb blanket, don’t expect to be rocking this by itself in cold weather and you’ll be fine. Again, temp rating are very suggestive; there is going to be someone out there who says they used it below freezing in a blizzard on Everest and they were hot…..but that isn’t going to be the case for most people. The temp range that I stated is reasonably accurate.

Excellent supplemental insulation layer; in other words, when using this with additional components it shines; use it with a sleeping bag liner, use it to add some warmth to your existing sleeping bag.
Example : I have a sleeping bag liner from Carinthia and in conjunction with this blanket, low 40’s is easily achievable and together it’s a lightweight kit.

With that being said, for what you are receiving as far as down goes, less than a pound, this blanket feel expensive. Susie thought that it cost $35 and was shocked to see a price tag of $70.
Small - some individuals will want and need a larger blanket - this is not very wide. Because it is so small, it is easy to become uncovered as you toss and turn throughout the night.

Snaps - As is, I do not find them to be useful - I would have liked to see snaps on the top and bottom - it would help with staying warm in cool conditions as it would prevent the blanket from falling away when tossing and turning.
A foot box would be very beneficial and would be easy to add to this product.
Down loss : Susie and I both have one of these blankets and we both experienced some initial down loss which has stopped. I never saw where the features were coming from but when we got them and first used them we both had feathers on us during the first couple of nights out. Feathers might have been in the stuff bag…not sure

I have gone over a lot of pros and cons and I’m sure that you are wondering, do i recommend this or not;
There is a time and a place for this product and I wish that the company was a bit more forthcoming about when that time was. The company claims that it is comfortable 45F with a sleeping pad but I do not find that to be accurate.
There are the issues with the measurements and then the difficulty to distinguish the down from the synthetic versions.
I do like the product and there are times and ways to use it where it works well; for some it will be worth it and for others, this is not going to be a beneficial product.

Price is very fair considering this is a handmade, high quality price of kit. When compared to other cottage companies and their offerings, the prices are lower than many.
Excellent warmth to weight ratio! - My bag is rated for 40F but I have pushed it to around 30F and I was very comfortable. I run hot though...everyone is different.

Review Cons : Because this is a hybrid bag, it isn’t the best sleeping bag due to the fact that there isn’t a hood and also, it is a bit roomer than a sleeping bag which can allow for more air inside of the bag that your body needs to warm. A mummy bag would fit closer and be a slight bit warmer.
At 40F for me, this isn’t that big of a deal but if you were to go with a lower rated bag it might be.
Warmer than a quilt, not as warm as a sleeping bag. With that being said, this hybrid is warmer than some other hybrid bags that I have as the baffles run vertically and the insulation allows for very little gaps between your body and the materials.
No draft collar for the zipper - you do have a wind block but not a draft collar; again, it really depends on what temp rating that you go with as to how big of a deal this is.
Pricey : No matter how you swing it, this is pricey. For some people this piece of gear is going to make sense. For others, it won’t. That’s how it goes.
Summary :
Throughout the spring, summer and going into the fall, this bag has proven itself to be an excellent sleeping bag. I love the versatility, the low weight and the overall warmth. I have used this inside of tents, under tarps, inside of Bivy in a wide range of conditions and it has excelled everywhere. I have ever used this in a hammock and it simply rocks.
