Decathlon Forclaz Trek 100, Compact Down Hiking Jacket ::

Agenda Free Link : https://www.decathlon.com/collections/womens-down-jackets/products/womens-backpacking-down-jacket-trek-100?variant=32494245347390

Sizes XS to 2XL
Colors available are – Navy, Pink, Blue, Yellow, and Brown color It is priced at $79.99
The jacket has a comfort rating between 23°F & 41°F. It has 800 down fill power. It has been treated so it’s water repellent, but not waterproof.

Compact design

Easily folds away in its left-hand pocket using a zipper with double pull. – fairly easy to do, typical with these jackets.

Weight : 9.7 oz in size S.

Main fabric · 100% Polyamide · 85% Grey duck down

Main lining · 100% Polyamide

Padding · 100% Polyester cationic

Padding - Inner fabric · 100% Polyester cationic

Has a hood, two pockets, YKK zippers, zipper pulls, wind block at the main zipper, one adjustable drawstring to pull tight around the bottom, hang loop at the tag as well as the hang loop when it’s packed down.

This jacket is meant to be worn as a 3rd layer and for all the testing that the company did, the model was wearing a long sleeve t-shirt and fleece so keep that in mind for the comfort rating and warmth figures. Kudos to the company for being completely transparent with their testing and how they came up with the figures.

Now that we have talked about the specs, let’s get to the review of the jacket and the pros and cons.

I have used this jacket in a range of temps from 20 degrees up to about 50 degrees. I have used it while hiking, running errands, and I have taken it backpacking and camping. It performed well for me as a layering piece. I love a down jacket, but like to layer and have an outer shell for protection of the jacket so wearing this with multiple layers works out really well because this jacket is thin. Being thin allows this to be lightweight and to pack down very small so it doesn’t take up a lot of space in your pack. This is what the company intended as well. I like it and find myself wearing it quite often. With that being said I will talk about the pros of the jacket.

The pros are

lots of color options

Size options

Lightweight

It packs into it’s own pocket so self contained stuff sack that won’t take up much space.

It’s affordable at $80

Offers 800 down fill

Good quality with zippers

From Decathlon, you will get free shipping and free returns

No big flashy logo to deal with.

Cons:

Runs small so size up! I am wearing a size medium when I would normally wear a size small in most everything else.
For my final thoughts, this jacket performs very well and for the price of $80, it’s a good piece of gear. I have used other jackets that cost much more and didn’t perform as well. I have also used jackets that cost more and while they performed well, they were much more lofty and hard to layer with. So with everything you buy, you have to decide what works well for you and what purpose it will serve. This might not be the perfect jacket for someone who wants it to run errands and use as their winter jacket, but it might be the perfect backpacking jacket when layers are essential. When used properly as a layering piece this jacket will work well. You won’t’ be comfortable going out in 20 degree weather with only this jacket, but if you have other layers, it will work.
Let me know your thoughts about this $80 jacket from Decathlon and if you have other questions that I didn’t answer, send me an email.

Until the next review, stay warm!

The Awesome German Army Folding Sleeping Mat - Review Update

This is the German Army Folding Sleeping Mat and over the course of the winter I have been using this product with many of my snow trips; I use it for a wide range of purposes including as a secondary barrier to the cold ground; a second sleeping pad and more.

It has been 6 years since my initial review and in this episode I'll go over why this product continues to be so good.

...
Foldable German Army Sleeping Mat

While my opinions for this piece of gear are virtually the same as my previous review, somethings have changed since I filmed my initial review; namely this product is harder to locate within the US and it is more expensive.

Before talking about those aspects, lets go over the pad and its stats.

Dimensions opened: 74.25 x 21.5 - roughly .25” When folded Square : 11.5 x 14.75 x 2”

Dimensions when folded depend on how you fold it.

- Weight : 14oz

This is a great pad for just about everything; other than sleeping. It’s very minimal when it comes to cushion so I like to use it as a secondary pad in the winter time.

What makes this pad so great is that you can use it to add support for your pack, use it to sit on, a s kneeling mat, a range mat, a work mat. I have even used this to line my hammock with and it works just fine for that.

Over all I am I impressed with the functionality and the versatility of this product; it’s light weight, and works well for a minimal mat for a wide range of purposes.

You can sleeping on, sit on it, kneel on it, use it for a shooting pad and so on.

Something to keep in mind is that it is very thin so if you are go out and buy one of these and think you are going to be purchasing an extremely comfortable pad, you are mistaken. The protection and comfort that it offers is minimal and that is the key word for this product.

You can use this for summer trips if you don’t need much in the way of cushion from the ground. If you lay this on thick grass and not on stick and rocks it will be much more comfortable.

As far as insulation goes, again it is minimal. It blocks the cold somewhat but it is thin and there is only so much that this material can do. As a secondary barrier that is how I use it when backpacking and camping and for that purpose it does great.

Points to mention, this pad is waterproof, not all that wide, not all that long, easy to clean, folds up in a variety of ways and is rather strong. I’ve used this matter on all sorts of surfaces and it works great and shows virtually no signs of use.

Again, this mat is thin, works best as a sitting pad, kneeling pad, and as a secondary sleeping pad. Great for minimalist minded individuals.

As with most things military, it is designed with survival in mind and not comfort. Before you buy, consider all of these factors and also size. Yes it folds up but it does have a noticeable footprint so to speak.

....
Cost and Availability:

Back when I initially reviewed this product, the going rate was around $20 and it could be found in the USA. Now the story is different, I have yet to find a single source in the USA and if you are interested in this product, it will have to be imported.

Not only will you have to pay import shipping charges but the price has gone up; now they run between $30 - $45. With it being likely that you will have to important this mat, make sure to pay attention to the shipping charges.

Some sellers will charge $12 while others will charge $25. Pay attention and shop smart.

Decathlon Camping Folding Table - Real Review

Agenda Free Link : https://www.decathlon.com/products/camping-folding-table-4-stools-4-to-6-people-130208?variant=32053685583934

Price : $60

Weight : 19lbs

Materials : Composition Structure 20% Steel 80% Aluminum Topsheet 100% Wood Main fabric 50% Polyethylene low density 50% Polyester cationic Features :

Camping Folding Table - 4 Stools - 4 to 6 People is designed for Our motivation? To offer you a complete and compact solution for 4 people. The 4 stools are integrated into the table to take up less space. Can accommodate up to 6 people.

User comfort Height: 27.6" | Total surface: 47.2" x 23.6" | Up to 6 people Compact design Compact when folded | Volume: 38 L | Dimensions: 23.6" x 23.6" x 4.1" Easy to transport 2 carry handles | Space under the table top for seats | Weight: 19.2 lbs Easy to open/close Very simple to unfold | 2 hooks to keep the table open Durability Laminated table top with aluminum frame and reinforcements | Steel legs

My Use :

I picked this up to use primarily out of my truck and I love it! It’s plenty big to be functional and yet, it isn’t so big that it takes all of the space in the bed. I plenty of space for a Cot, the table and there is enough room left over for my buddy heater and so on.

Review Pros :

Amazing price

Good quality (not the best but for the price, absolutely acceptable

Good height - not too high or too low

Includes 4 stools that are comfortable enough

Functional and stable enough

- Can be used for just about any purpose with the exception as a work table; if you need something that is rock solid and won’t move and shake, this isn’t it. Great for camp supplies, plates, cooking and so on; not something that would be able to support power tools or any serious weight.

Storage underneath

Good fold up size

Easy to transport

Easy to deploy and to break down

Not overly heavy or cumbersome

Provides as excellent surface for whatever you want to do.

Table height is adjustable

Review Cons :
Is this really a 6 person table? Well it depends how everyone is using it of course but 4 people can comfortably use it, 6 is a push.

Quality is good as I mentioned before but this isn’t going to blow you away with just how solid that it feels. It’s good enough but does have some flex which stored.

Stools can rattle inside of the case

Stools aren’t the most comfortable but for a short duration sit, I won’t complain. They are as comfortable as a stool of this size can be so there are no surprises here.

While this is completely subjective, I would love to see this being offered in other colors; while not the worst, it doesn’t match my tastes. Imagine an OD green frame with black top of vice versa; that would be sick! :D

Summary :

For my purposes this table is excellent and it is a very functional aspect of my overloading / truck camping system. The price is amazing and so is the functionality. The stools work well enough but I’ll be honest, I tend not to use them and will go with something a bit more comfortable.

For the money, I think that this is a brilliant system and I can easily recommend it as long as you use it within the parameters of how it was designed.

For your vehicle and traveling, it works.

For quick deployment and a picnic, it works

For a stable surface for cooking, eating, playing cards, it works.

Fjallraven Trekking Gaiters - Real Review

Agenda Free Link : https://www.fjallraven.com/eu/en-gb/women/accessories/other-accessories/trekking-gaiters

Price : Around $70

Weight : 10.5oz combined

Materials : Out Shell Material - 100% polyester Membrane: 100% polyurethane

Sizes : XXS to XXL is listed on the Fjallraven Web Site but on the gaiters it says One Size. When I purchased these from Campsavor last year, I don’t remember being given the option to select the size.

Colors : Stone Grey and Forest Green

PRODUCT FEATURES : Gaiters in heavy-duty, waterproof polyester. Zip at the front concealed under front flap with velcro. Elastic draw cord in the upper part. Elastic around the ankle and at the bottom. Hook to fasten the gaiters to the boots.

Gaiters that prevent snow and moisture from forcing their way under and up the trouser leg. Made from very durable PU-treated polyester fabric. Zipper protected by flap with velcro closures. Elastic adjustments up to and covering the ankle. Buckled strap that wraps under the foot and the front, top section has a hook that can be attached to the shoelaces.

Forward : While the list of pros for these gaiters are longer than the cons, the negatives by fair outweighs the good. Because of that, lets focus on what makes these gaiters so poor for outdoor use.

Pros : Excellent build quality Excellent colors and styling Impressively waterproof Keeps snow out Smooth zipper Good features Very tough and robust materials Easy to put on and to take off.

Cons : Deal breakingly poor breathability. Going out for a simple hike will leave your legs wet and your pants very moist. The performance is so poor that it could leave you in a fairly dangerous situation.

No strap keeper on the sides

Summary :

Fjallraven is a company that very rarely disappoints but this product is the exception.

There are two aspects which make for a good pair of gaiters; They have to be waterproof and they have to be breathable and if either of this aspects are present you are going to have a problem.

Unfortunately for Fjallraven and for us, these Gaiters have the waterproof aspect down but they are so far away from being breathable that they are completely unusable. In fact, they are in my opinion dangerous in certain situations.

If you go out for a hike and when you take these gaiters off and your pants are wet you are putting yourself into a potentially dangerous situation.

As far as breathability goes, these are by far the worst performing gaiters that I have ever used. They are simply TERRIBLE and will leave you comprised in certain situations. For an example, go out for a cold winter trip and when you take them off, your pants are wet from moisture build up and the gaiters themselves will be covered in moisture as well. You then have two problems, your clothing is wet and so are the gaiters;

Do you change clothes, do you try to dry your pants? You will also have to focus on the gaiters to prevent them from icing otherwise the next day when you put them on, the ice will melt and your pants will get wet.

My advice would be look elsewhere if you have a need for gaiters; Outdoor Research, Outdoor Designs, Black Diamond and other companies offer products which will perform much, much better than these.
