NatureHike Backpacking Stove Review
What it is : What I have here to review today is a budget friendly stove that I have been testing out for the last month or so, it’s from NatureHike and is their backpacking canister stove.

Agenda Free Link : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078Z9MLNL

Price : $20 at the time of filming

Weight of Stove with Carry Box : 10oz
9oz for the stove alone

Materials : Stainless steel, brass and Aluminum Alloy

Dimensions :
2.75” tall
6.5” from farthest pot support
17” long hose

Performance :
Output : 10,236 BTU’s - in what I would call perfect outdoor conditions I have been able to boil 16oz of water in 2 minutes 36 seconds.

Plus, most stoves are highly inefficient when running wide open and gain in efficiency when running at lower levels.

You would think that it would be simple to come up with a standardize test but it’s really not that easy and again, it goes back to the variables and there are so many in play that no test is accurate. If you see someone making an efficiency claim on YT, it’s nonsense.

Pros :

Good price
Good overall quality for the money
Sturdy for the money
Good performance - stove is quick enough and the stove can simmer easily.
Easy to setup and breakdown stove - legs deploy easily
Cools quickly
Stable platform for pots, cup and pans.
Can support up to 8” pans and still have a good cooking experience.
Electronic Ignitor works well - you may have to click it a few times here and there to get it to go but it does eventually catch. This is average performance with these Ignitors.
Skid pads on the pot supports actually work

Cons :
I mentioned the overall sturdiness of this stove previously, again for the money it’s good but compared to higher end, more expensive stoves you can tell that this costs $20. There is a difference between a stove like this and one from MSR, SOTO and other companies.

This stove doesn’t feature a regulator that is designed for cold weather and for the money I wouldn’t expect it to. For cold weather use, keep the fuel warm and that will help.
While the performance of this stove is good, I don’t believe that it is 3000W or 10,200 BTU’s like the company states ; I say that based on overall boil times compared to other stoves that i have tested - I have similar BTU rated stoves that boil 1 liter of water in less than 4 minutes whereas this one is over 5 minutes.

The company claims good windproof performance and that isn’t accurate at all. With some versions of this stove, the burner head will have a windscreen that surrounds it; this stove doesn’t have one and the flame is influenced easily by the wind.

A windscreen will be needed in windy situations.

Speaking of this, the description by NatureHike speaks of a built in wind deflector which isn’t present.

My thoughts on this stove are as follows; this is a relabel and NatureHike had a manufacturer make this for them with their logo on there. There are a thousand companies with the same stove with some having slight variations here and there.

Going back to the listing, with this being a relabel stove, the description is likely taken from a variant of this stove but in this case, the NH version doesn't have the windscreen.

….

Summary :
Ultimately with the stove, the overall performance is good for the money. The overall quality of the stove is good for the money. The overall weight of the stove is good for the money.

There’s absolutely nothing unique about the stove and in fact there are literally hundreds if not thousands of copies in variance of this. In the end though, because the stove is mass produced on an incredible Level, this allows for the product to be a low priced option which it is.

None of the cons that I have for this product or dealbreaker‘s especially when you consider the low price. So far with my used, I’ve had no issues and I don’t expect there to be any either. NatureHike has a fairly good reputation when it comes to the quality of their products; while their designs are always the best for the overall quality and performance is good for the dollar.

Just Plain Dangerous - Fjallraven Wind Sack 3 Emergency Shelter FAILURE ...

This is the Fjallraven Wind Sack 3 and this is my Agenda Free Review of this Emergency Shelter.  It's a complete failure in so many ways and I can't help but think that the Marketing Arm of Fjallraven is to blame.

Verdict - Don't put your life into the hands of this product.

What a let down - Fjallraven Wind Sack Emergency Shelter - Agenda Free Review

What it is : This is a Lightweight emergency shelter, known as the Wind Sack and it was designed (according to the company) to keep 3 individuals out of the wind, snow and rain.

Agenda Free Link : https://www.fjallraven.com/us/en-us/bags-gear/tents-sleeping-bags/tent-accessories/wind-sack-3

Versions : 1 person and 3 person : There was a 2 person version in the past but I believe it has been discontinued and is no longer listed on the Fjallraven web site.

Materials : 100% polyamide 40D TripleRip Sil/Sil 3000 mm

100% polyamide

Dimensions : 7.5 x 7.5 x 4”

Weight : 1lb 6oz

Price : $150

Experiences : I have tested this product extensively and I have done so in numerous adventures here on the channel.

I’ve used this in the rain, in the wind, in the cold and in the snow and unfortunately this is not a well throughout product and in fact, I question whether anyone at Fjallraven has actually taken this product out into the wild to test it.

If they had done so, then this would be a much different product.

It’s not to say that it is the worst survival product ever but it has problems so big and it will only work in very specific situations which is very unfortunate because one can dictate terms in an emergency situation. Because of that a survival emergency product needs to be easily and quickly adaptable so that it can offer protection from the elements…all elements.

That is not this product.

The reason I bought this :

If you go by the marketing and the talking points that Fjallraven makes, this sounds like a very functional emergency shelter but after using it I can tell you that isn’t the case. Many of the points are flat out incorrect.

Before I touch upon those, I should mention that I am an advocate for emergency shelters; you have to be ready and prepared for the conditions to change and that’s because they do! If you are out hiking and a thunderstorm rolls through and it’s 40F, you need protection. If you are on the trail and can’t make it back to your vehicle for whatever reason, an emergency shelter could be the difference between life and death.

If you are mountaineering above the tree line and a snow squall develops you need immediate protection.

These are just a few situations where an emergency shelter would be needed; For years I have carried with me an ultralight tarp and when I came across this product from Fjallraven, I wanted to see if it could replace the tarp that I normally bring with me.

Can it?

No, not even close.

Addressing Company Claims and Features :

Emergency shelter for up to three persons. Only in a pinch can this be used by 3 people and only in a specific situation. Let’s say you are hiking with 2 other people and you need to get out of the elements for a few minutes, you can take the wind sack and throw it over each other. Once inside, you all will be extremely close to each other and instantly condensation will begin to form on the walls. 3 persons in a pinch for a short period of time is logical. 3 persons in a longer duration event would not be as there is simply not enough space.

Protects against wind, snow and rain. The product does a great job of blocking wind. It does a great job of block snow. It does a terrible job at blocking rain. In fact, it will leak substantially in anything other than a light mist. Moisture will make its way through the vents at the top even when they are closed and the zippers are covered.

Three individual zippers for ventilation and as openings for heads. Yes there are 3 vents, how useful they are depends on how the product is being used and the conditions that it is being used in.

Lightweight wind sack that provides fast shelter from rain, snow and wind. Gives portable shelter from stormy weather, especially if the snow depth is minimal and digging down is not possible. A must when winter touring, but also in summer when you need shelter during meal and rest breaks. Made from lightweight, strong 40D TripleRip nylon. Its colour is UN Blue which is highly visible in the terrain, all year round, and it has reflectors on both sides. A safety carabiner attaches the wind sack to the user to prevent it from blowing away in strong winds. Three separate zippers let in fresh air and can be used as openings for heads. Room for three people. Packs into itself.

This product is not one that I would recommend and to start with the review, let's focus on those reasons. These are the cons for this product.

Review Cons :

First big problem, it isn’t waterproof so it can’t be used in the rain or in wet snow events.

Second big problem, condensation is Atrocious with one person inside of it; I can’t even imagine what it would be like with 3. With just one person inside of this, with all 3 vents open and a gap at the ground with the wind blowing, you will have condensation running down the walls in no time.

If you simply pull this over your head and use it as a sack, you better put your rain gear on as well as it will soak you.

If setting this up as a shelter, setting it up so you can stand inside of it and stay away from the walls, you may need your rain gear! If it is above freezing, moisture will form on the walls and will rain down on you in windy situations. If below freezing, all of that moisture will freeze on the walls.

Use : I would only recommend using this product as a shelter; it features numerous tie off points so you can string it up and that is the only way to use it for long duration events. Also, if being used for a long duration event, 2 people is max as far as capacity goes. Any more than that and each user would be coming into full contact with each other and also the walls of the product and that isn’t recommended due to the condensation issues. No one will be even remotely comfortable.

Not enough Tie off Points : This product was designed to be used in numerous ways and because of that there are numerous tie off points; unfortunately there needs to be more and the existing ones need to be placed in better locations. As it stands, the product is difficult to setup in a way so that you aren’t put into a dangerous situation. Condensation is terrible even with excellent ventilation and if you don’t come up with ways to keep the fabric off you, you will be soaked in no time.

For my use, I have had to create my own anchor points and that has been the only way I could use this product safely.

When using the product as a shelter, it is a real pain to get into it and out of it.

Vents : the top vents aren’t as useful as they should be; if it is being used as a shelter, the storm flap on the outside covers the zippers and limits airflow….big time!

If using the product as a sack the vents are certainly more open but won’t stop rain from coming inside.

In warm conditions this product is brutal to use. Hot, humid, blocks wind and even with the vents open and the bottom off of the ground….Stifling.

Really expensive : If this product was designed differently, if it was a good emergency shelter I would say that $150 would be a fair price but as it stands right now, it’s insanely overpriced for what it does and what it offers the users.

Review Pros :

Easy to deploy when being used in a short duration event; this is what I call the body bag. In other words, you unfold the product and pull it over your head.

Can be used as a tarp.

Can be used as a shelter.

Overall build quality is top notch.

Top notch materials -

Extremely strong - I used this in a shelter setup in sustained winds of over 40mph and it held up with no problems. Even with my makeshift anchor points, I never felt like it was going to come apart.

The sil nylon does stretch and that’s a good thing. If setting this up as a shelter, you have some Leeway as the material will stretch so you can more easily get the setup that you want. Also, the stretch of the material allows for it to handle strong winds with easy; it can stretch and adapt to the wind - materials that don’t do this can rip and tear as they have no give and take in windy conditions.

Fairly lightweight for the size of the shelter

Color is very visible in virtually all conditions. Forest, Desert, Snow, and so on.

Product is 100% windproof

The wind sack holds in a fair amount of heat - I recorded a 10 degree difference between outside and inside.

Folds up rather easily and is quick to store.

Summary :

The product is called the Wind Sack and that is really what it is; it is a product that blocks the wind and that should be its selling point.

After reading over the marketing BS from the company and testing this out, I am very frustrated. Frustrated with Fjallraven and with this product. It has so much promise but yet falls so incredibly short. I don’t regret buying this as I am glad to show you all how to use and how not to but as an emergency shelter this has so many problems……problems that could literally get you killed.

That really, really angers me; Fjallraven, are you all taking the products that you are making out into the field? Are you all actually testing these out? I don’t think so, otherwise this would be a very different product.

It’s not waterproof….this fact alone blows my mind.

Then the condensation…..

Fjallraven is going to kill someone or potentially a group of people.

The company claims year round use……that’s complete nonsense. In the summer, pull this thing over your head in a rainstorm. You will be soaked in sweat, soaked in condensation and the d*mn thing will leak.

One point to make here; it really feels like this isn’t being marketed correctly; maybe the marketing department at Fjallraven is involved and it is them who is saying to list it as waterproof, year round use and so on.

I don’t know.

This is a short duration, dry snow and wind protection product and that’s it. You get this out, you pull it over your head and get out of the wind or dry snow so you can look at your map and then you put it up and continue on.

Fjallraven : The marketing for a product is so important; say what it is and stop trying to sell it. Drop all of the falsities that have been added on and tell your customers what this really is and how to use it.

Over the years I have spoken very highly of Fjallraven; I love their pants, jackets, tents, backpacks…..but I don’t love everything that they make and do. I have had issues with numerous products and this is another one that really falls short. That’s the wrong way to put it as it is worse than that; it’s dangerous! There is a time and a place for this product but it is extremely limited and I wish that the company would have been more honest and accurate with their statements.

Helikon-Tex Poncho U.S. Model, Surplus Line

What it is : This is a lightweight poncho made by Helikon-Tex that I have been testing out for roughly 6 months now.

Agenda Free Link Helikon : https://www.helikon-tex.us/poncho-u-s-model.html

Agenda Free Link Amazon : https://www.amazon.com/Helikon-Tex-Waterproof-Poncho-Ripstop-Black/dp/B00D9A2QQ4

Cost : $35

Colors : Black, two shades of green, and two woodland camo versions.

Sizes : One Size Fits All

Dimensions : 82.5 x 57” - That’s 82.5” long which unbuttoned and unfolded. When in poncho mode, it’s only around 40” long

Stored - 5.5” x 8.6”

Materials : Polyester

Features :
Hood with cord adjuster
Taped seams
Press studs and metal eyelets at the edges
Can be stabilized via dedicated cord

Surplus Line : This basically means that this poncho and the company’s other items that are part of this line are modeled after well known military surplus items. In this case, this poncho is modeled after the US Military poncho.

Modeled is the key word there.

Review Pros :

Good quality for a military “style” poncho. Better quality than most cheap ponchos that you can find in stores and online at sites like walmart or amazon.

I’ve experienced no leaking with this poncho and I have been out in the middle of tropical storms that have come through the area. Longest duration has been in the rain for roughly 2 hours with no issues.

It’s simple - quick to deploy

Fair Price - if purchased from an honest dealer - more on that in a moment.

Smaller hood and neck hole allow for less water / rain to get into the poncho

Can be used with the Swagman Roll as a sort of poncho liner.

Light weight

Compact

Storage included and it is big enough to easily hold the poncho. No issues with getting it out or putting it back in.

Review Cons :
I mentioned that this is part of the Surplus line and that it is modeled after the old US Military Poncho. Again, Modeled is the key word there as it is loosely modeled after the military variant.

This poncho is smaller in size - for a poncho it is rather short and the taller you are, the less protection that it will give your lower body. It’s about 4” shorter length and width than a military poncho
it will not mate to original military accessories such as the military poncho liner correctly.
If using this as a shelter, it is again due to the dimensions being rather small. It’s difficult to get good protection with it as it’s not as long nor as wide as a typical poncho.
The hood and head hole are smaller - if you have a big head it will be a tight fit.
These are made from Polyester whereas the military version was nylon. Polyester isn’t as strong as nylon and is generally a less expensive material. Civilian grade, not military - Because its not military grade, it is small and lighter in weight.

Small Size : Going back to the size, I would pay extra close attention to those measurements to see if this is going to work for you as this isn’t a large poncho by any means.

Cost : The retail price for this poncho is very fair for what it is but there are secondary sellers who are basically ripping people off. Take some sellers on Amazon, I’ve seen these ponchos being sold for as much as $70….this is not worth $70. This is a polyester poncho - it’s worth no more than around $40.

Side Snaps : I’ve had no issues with these but you have to be careful with them. They are fragile and there are plenty of reports of these being damage and destroyed rather easily.

Summary :
For the retail price, this poncho has served me well and I have no problem with recommending it. I would look passed the whole Surplus Line that Helikon has going on; that’s more marketing gimmick than anything else.

Pay attention to the measurements; will the smaller poncho work for you?

Also, watch the prices; don’t pay more than what this poncho is worth unless you really want it.

A Very Different Tent - Hilleberg Unna - First Look and Discussion

A Very Different Tent - Hilleberg Unna - First Look and Discussion

Last week we took a look at the Hilleberg Soulo which is one of the most popular 4 season tents on the market today. In this episode, Luke is going over another popular tent from the Hilleberg that is known as the Unna.

This is the Hilleberg Unna tent and you are about to see what make it so special.....and also, so expensive!

Hilleberg Unna

What it is : This is a Freestanding, 4 season tent that is made by one of the worlds most respected tent manufacturers.

Agenda Free Link : https://hilleberg.com/eng/tent/red-label-tents/unna/

Price : $740

Availability : Currently just about every Hilleberg tent is limited in terms of availability. I expect to see product availability improvements in 2023; until then you can get on waiting lists with Hilleberg or with outfitters. There is also the used market if interested.

Colors : Green, Red, Sand

Size : The company claims 1 person but two full size sleeping pads will fit inside of this tent

Single entrance, FreeStanding Dome Tent
Bathtub floor, vent cover fly

Weight : 5lbs 1oz packed weight

Materials : Kerlon 1200 YKK Zippers, 2x 9mm Aluminum poles, 12 tent stakes

Measurements : 43” wide, 39” tall, 90” long

Label : Red
I’ve covered this before in other videos so I won’t do it again in the same detail. Hilleberg has multiple labels and this is a way to classify their tents in terms of strength and weight.

Black - for the worst conditions imaginable- heaviest of the Hilleberg Tents

Red - still very strong but lighter - very much 4th season capable and in fact, Red Label tents are what I use for winter camping in blizzards and storms.

Yellow - 3 season tents that are as lightweight as possible

From the Company :
OUR SIMPLEST SOLO TENT, the fully free standing Unna is supremely easy to pitch nearly anywhere – rocky shores, narrow ridgelines, dense forests (or, of course, even on “perfect” tent sites) – and it boasts an impressive amount of interior space. It is ideal for journeys in any season where low weight is a high priority, and where the terrain makes for tricky pitching conditions. Rather than a vestibule, the Unna has a spacious interior that easily accommodates the occupant and gear – or, in a pinch, two people. And by disconnecting a corner of the inner tent, one can create a virtual vestibule and keep the inner tent dry while entering or exiting in rainy conditions. Its dome design handles snow loading well, and its roominess and light weight lend themselves very well to mobile journeys, where you pitch your tent each day. Little wonder then that it has become a favorite of paddle tourers, year ‘round backpackers, mountaineers, cycle tourers and casual campers alike.

Use : The company claims year round use with this tent but as is, I would disagree. With a double wall tent that features a fabric inner, these are not used in the warmer months and that’s because such a design was created for winter time, cold conditions. The fabric walls limit air flow, they block wind and they hold in heat….this is everything that you don’t want in the warmer months. Using a tent that features a fabric inner in the warmer months translates to a miserable experience unless you are at high elevations where its rather windy and cool.

Replacement Inner : Luckily Hilleberg has thought of this and offers a mesh inner body for warmer areas; these inner kits are rather expensive ($230)

Vestibule - You can disconnect the inner closest to the door so that you have a vestibule : Also this is a good way to protect the inner tent from getting wet when entering and exiting during a rain event.

The Absolute WORST - Wadeo Wood Burning Stove Review

The Absolute WORST - Wadeo Wood Burning Stove Review

Luke is back with another 100% Agenda Free Review of a wood burning stove from the company known as Wadeo.

This happens to be the biggest piece of JUNK and I wouldn't waste your money on it.....it's terrible in just about every single way possible.

This is Luke's review of the Wadeo Wood Burning Stove...it's a P.O.S.

Wadeo Wood Burning Camp Stove

...It features the absolute worst of designs and in fact, this is the worst wood burning stove I have ever seen.

Agenda Free Link : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08XWF8SCT

Materials : 304 Stainless Steel

Weight : 2lbs 3.3oz

Dimensions :
9.5” tall
6.5” x 6.5” at the bottom
4.25” x 4.25” at the top

Pot Support Measurements :
5.5” x 5.5” side to side
Diagonally 8”

Price : $22

Best Use : While you can use this stove with a small cup, it is a designed for larger pots and pans

Included : Case, stove, saw, bellows

Review Pros :

Easy to put together and to take apart - stoves like this can be difficult to get together. That isn’t the case in this situation as everything fits together easy enough. That's not to say the design is great because it's not.

Speaking of which, the overall design of this stove is TERRIBLE and it’s not one that i have seen before….for a good reason.

The bottom panels are strange and are dangerous and don’t lock into place. I’ll talk more about this in a moment

Back to the pros, I have three;

Easy enough to put together
Can support large pots
Cools quickly

That’s all…

Now onto the cons….

Review Cons :

Weight - Company Claims : Lightweight - No, not really. This is a fairly heavy stove and it’s noticeable in your hand especially when you compare this to similarly sized wood stoves.

Weird overall design that hinders overall use and functionality.

The bottom panel which is meant to hold and support your fuel has WAY TOO MANY holes in it; way too many and they are way too large. So big in fact that the wood that you put in this stove will fall through as you fill it and use it.

The bottom panels come in two pieces and they do not lock into place. This slows down the setup process and creates a weak point for this stove. If you jostle those plates when using this stove you can dislodge the panels; at that point you could have a problem on your hands with your burning debris falling to the ground

The bottom panels present a serious safety issue; so much burning debris will fall through on to the ground….

The large feeding port is at the bottom of the stove; while in theory this allows for large pieces of wood to be burned, the overall stove design hinders this fact. You have to have a good amount of burning material present to ignite larger pieces of wood; that burning material is going to be present at the bottom, which is the feeding port. Normally you load large pieces of wood higher up on a stove due so that they can be exposed to high heat and because the bottom on the stove is going to be full of embers and your smaller burning material. Feeding this stove isn’t easy as you feed it at the bottom of the stove…you need to feed a wood stove like this from the top/

Air holes at the top of the stove can be used to feed the stove but they are rather small considering the overall size of this stove.

The bottom of the legs are sharp and can easily scratch whatever surface that you rest this stove on. This isn’t all that important but you do have to be careful where you put it.

Using this stove with with an alcohol stove is nonsensical. The stove itself sits way too low for it to be efficient. This is BS claim made by the company.

The company shows this stove being used with solid fuel…that too is nonsensical as the fuel is too far away from the bottom of your pot, it is highly inefficient.

Stove when it is put together isn’t all that solid. It doesn’t fall apart when you are moving it but the bottom panels can come loose and the body flexes.

The pot supports are designed to gain attention in a picture on Amazon rather than be useful. It’s the first thing that I noticed about this stove and is why I decided to purchase it.

You can see how it raises as you go out on the supports and this offers no benefit when it comes to using this stove. A simple pot support would have been much, much better.

Do not buy this.
Don’t give this company your hard earned money.

These Gore-Tex Military Waterproof Gloves are Awesome But - Outdoor Rese...

Outdoor Research MGS Shell Gloves

What is it : These are tactical gloves made primarily for the US Military, they are waterproof, windproof and are breathable and are designed to go over your existing pair of insulated gloves and liners.

Agenda Free Link : ebay.com

Sizes : S, M, L, XL, XXL

Weight : 4.8oz for the small size

Materials :
MAIN SHELL : 2.5L GORE-TEX, SYNTHETIC PALM : SuperFabric
INDEX/THUMB FINGERS: Leather

Price :
The retail price of these is insane; roughly $270

Did I pay $270 for a pair of gloves? Hell no and that is one of the reasons why I am making this video.

Recently I was filming a rain adventure and my hands were getting a bit cold and I started thinking about getting gore-tex shells.

When I had some down time, this is what I found to go with.

I did a quick search and found these gloves and was shocked at the price so I hopped on one of my favorite sites and found these same gloves for an insane price.

$70.

I made an offer for $30 and the offer was accepted and here we are today.

Brand new, included the tags and even the price tag.

As with most things in life, there is a catch for such a great deal and that comes in size.

While there were some larges and smalls available when I ordered, they were in short supply. The Small size was abundant and that is what I went with and here is why.

Normally I wear a medium but with these being a shell I figured that a small would work for my needs as I am a fan of wearing very thin gloves throughout most of the winter. They allow for me to move, be active and not get overheated and these shells in conjunction with my gloves, looks like a perfect combination. With gloves like this I generally stay warm in temps all the way down to 0 but that is what I am acclimated to.

Will it be? We will find out and I will do a followup in the future once I have fully tested them.

Until then I wanted to get this video up, let you know of the product, the deal that I got and if you can get the size to work it may benefit a few of you.

By the way, at the time of filming, I saw multiple sizes on eBay including Large, those were going for roughly $50 but were limited in quantity. I didn’t see any mediums.

From the Company :
MGS :
The MGS Shell Gloves are part of the new Modular Glove System (MGS), a complete collection of protective handwear that have been designed to work together for optimal dexterity, tactility, and reduced weight. Each of these pieces utilizes Outdoor Research exclusive 3D Fit Technology™; a new generation of 3D modeling pattern-making that allows total freedom of movement and functionality. The waterproof, breathable, and fast drying MGS Shell Gloves™ are intended to be an outer shell worn over various liner glove combinations; from an MGS insulated liner to a thin combat glove.

MonoCinch
Elasticized Inner Wrist
Seam Taped

Testing :

I’ve had these gloves in for a short period of time and hope to begin testing them out in a winter storm that is coming in next week. My experience is limited but I did do some quick waterproof testing at the house and put my hands with the gloves on in the Creek for 5 minutes and experienced no leaking. I could feel the coolness of the water but yet, there was no penetration through any seams.

Good fit especially with the thinner gloves that I like to wear.

Grippy palms and fingers

Works great with phones including Samsung and iPhone.

Hilleberg Soulo 1 Person 4 Season Tent : First Look

What it is : The Soulo is a completely free standing solo tent that is reasonably lightweight for a 4 season tent and is expedition-ready.

Agenda Free Link : https://hilleberg.com/eng/tent/red-label-tents/soulo

Versions :
Regular : Kerlon 1200 with 9mm poles
Black Label : Kerlon 1800 Material and 10mm poles

Price :
Regular : $765
Black Label : $825

Availability : Currently there are shortages for just about everything within the outdoor industry and that is true with Hilleberg products. I did some calling around to different outfitters, all around the country including Alaska and everyone is out and there are waiting lists.

Why am I doing the video? I’m getting this information out there concerning this tent; there will be a time when this tent is going to be available. Plus, you might be able to find one used.

Speaking of this tent, I had a viewer locate one of these and he donated it to the channel so that I could review it, Agenda Free. Thank you very much.

Weight :
Red Label : 5lbs 7oz packed
Black Label : 6lbs 3oz packed

Materials :
Kerlon 1200 Fly- 30D Ripstop Nylon - coated with 3 layers of silicon, treated for UV resistance. Tear Strength of around 26.5lbs. 5000mm Hydrostatic head rating.

Inner Tent : 30D Nylon with durable water repellent treatment

Floor : 70D Nylon Triple polyurethane coating - 15,000mm hydrostatic head rating.

Black label Kerlon 1800 has a tear strength of around 40lbs

YKK Zippers
3 Aluminum poles
12 v-stakes
Guy lines 132lb breaking strength

Hilleberg does an incredible job of detailing their tents including the materials and differences between the labels on their web site. Check that out if you are looking for information that I didn’t mention.

Colors : Green, Red and Sand

Features :
All season construction: outer tent walls extend to the ground and mesh areas are backed with adjustable fabric panels.

Dome construction with multiple pole crossing points provide outstanding snow-load handling capability.

Plenty of room for one occupant and his or her gear.

Linked but separable inner and outer tent for simultaneous pitching.

Fully free standing dome design requires no pegs for pitching, and the straightforward short sleeve and clip pole system make for quick, easy set up.

The single entrance/single vestibule configuration affords easy access as well as storage space.

An optional footprint covers the entire area of the outer tent, including the vestibules. It connects directly to the tent, and can be left attached during pitching.

The inner tent can be replaced with a Mesh Inner tent (sold separately; see accessories).

The outer and inner tents can be used separately. Pitching the inner tent alone requires optional pole holders (see accessories).

…….
Thoughts So Far :

Impressive Quality

Easy setup : - I love the fact that the poles don’t have to go through sleeves. They can be a huge pain. Poles are color coated for easy setup.

Exposed Poles : There is a con to having exposed poles though; they are exposed and will cover in snow and ice. This isn’t the biggest problem in the world but it can slow you down in some situations - example, if the snow/moisture falls on the poles, it can freeze and then you have to take the time to thaw them to pull them apart so that you can break down the tent.

Tent features a fly first pitch; the body is attached to the fly and the tent can be setup in the rain and snow and the inner will stay dry during the setup process.

Tent is truly freestanding - fly doesn’t require staking.

Stuff sack is plenty big for the tent.

Protective flap over zipper
Zipper lock so it can’t open in bad weather

Fly goes all the way down to the ground

Bathtub floor

Can sit-up in the tent - plenty of space, doesn’t feel like a coffin.

Vent

In the future I will do a video discussing Hillebergs 1 person tent options so that you can get an idea of whether or not one is for you or not.

Expensive

Lifetime warranty

Tent should be Insanely strong

Mountain Hardwear JMT 35 Backpack :

What it is : This is a 35L backpack that features a clamshell design; made for day hikes or minimal loadout overnight trips.

Agenda Free Link : https://www.mountainhardwear.com/p/jmt-35l-backpack-1938331.html

Versions : 25l, 35l versions; Men’s, Women’s

Sizes : Small Medium and Medium Large
35L - 2136 cu in
Pack Torso S/M: 16 in - 19 in
Pack Torso M/L: 18 In - 21 In
Pack Waist S/M: 28 in - 47 in
Pack Waist M/L: 30 in - 48 in

Colors : Black and Spruce

Cost : retail $160

Weight : Small Medium - 2lbs 10oz

Materials :
210D ripstop shell and 420D Cordura base
YKK Zippers
ITW buckles - excellent
Steel fire frame

Review Pros
:

With all of my testing, this has proven itself to being a top notch day pack and if you can go minimal enough, it can be used for overnight trips.

Excellent quality
Top notch materials
Very comfortable to wear; excellent shoulder straps and adjustability
Handles the weight of your loadout very well; frame and suspension distribes the weight properly.

Excellent features

The removable mesh pocket is awesome; funny story, I had no idea that this existed until recently. I had seen pictures of this pack without it and with it and figured that it was an accessory that had to be purchased separately. Why did I think that? Because there is no mention of this feature on the MH web site or anywhere else and like i said, often times you will see pics of this pack without.

Hydration compatible

Compressions straps
Stretchy and large size hydration packs

Price :
Before moving on to the cons for this pack I want to talk about price for a moment.

$160 for a day pack sounds like a lot of money for this type of backpack but it isn’t; I should say this, it used to be but it’s not any more. This year with the outdoor industry along with most others, everyone is beginning to see just how much of an impact inflation is having and this is a great example. I did some searching last night for 35L backpacks and the majority of them are $150 and up with many being around $200.

That used to be considered expensive but now is commonplace.

To find a backpack that is 35L that is under $150 your options are going to be limited to military surplus or products from Chinese companies.

With that being said, the quality of this pack is top notch, the materials and components are also the best of the best so you are getting what you pay for. Is it worth $160? That’s up to you but I think it is.

Review Cons :

No strap keeps for the waist belt; the straps are huge and a few rubbers bands are a good solution.

Just ok in terms of ventilation. You will get wet with sweat and drying off will come only when you take the pack off. Make sure to wear the right clothing with this pack to prevent problems from arising.

Waist belt offers little in terms of padding; it’s a simple system made more for controlling the loadout than comfort. With loadouts up to 20lbs I have had no problems with it.

No rain cover is needed - pack is moderately water resistant on its own.

Only one waist belt pocket - on the other side you have a stretchy mesh sleeve and an additional pocket would be more beneficial.

At times the pack can make a creaky noise.

….
Summery :
My time with this pack has proven this to be an excellent backpack; one that I use for all sorts of purposes including overnight trips, day hikes and for photography. My camera inserts fit perfectly in this pack.

This is a backpack that is going to last a very long time thanks to the construction, quality of the materials and so on.

It’s an easy recommend from me if you need a pack of this size.

What does "Weatherproof" Mean Exactly? - Epiphany Outdoor Gear Baddest B...

Luke is back to evaluate another Fire Starter that makes some very bold claims!

The Epiphany Outdoor Gear Baddest Bee Fire Fuses claim to burn up to 10 minutes, have a 3" - 5" flame and are weatherproof.

Every Single One of these Claims are a Lie!

Epiphany Outdoor Gear Baddest Bee Fire Fuses

What it is : Small, lightweight fire starters that can be used to get your fires going.

Agenda Free Link 3” Fuses : https://www.amazon.com/Epiphany-Outdoor-Gear-Baddest-3-Pack/dp/B06WLLFQWH

Versions : 3”, 1.75” : available at different sites

Price : $9 for the 20 1.75” pack
$16 for a 3 pack of 3” long fuses.

I like the smaller pre-cut size myself and that is why I picked these up to take a look at.

Weight of container with 20 fuses : .8oz / 22g
Weight of an individual fuse : so lightweight that i couldn’t get my scale to even read one.

Burn time : up to 10 minutes

Materials : Baddest Bee Fire Fuses are “Made in the USA” of 100% organic materials including beeswax, olive oil, spice/food based dyes, and cotton

Company Claims :
“Baddest Bee Fire Fuses which provide users a weatherproof tinder that produces a strong, long-burning, breezeproof flame that is considerably larger, stronger, and longer burning than a flame produced by match or butane lighter.”

“Due to the low flash/ignition temperature of the materials and organic weatherproofing formula we use, our Baddest Bee Fire Fuses are extremely effective at igniting from sparks cast off flint striking tools in wet (and dry) conditions where forest floor tinders are too damp to ignite. Coupling this larger, longer burning flame with a bellowing tool gives users the opportunity to start a fire with wet fuels they wouldn’t normally be able to start.” - Epiphany Outdoors Site

“Baddest Bee Fire Fuses provide users weatherproof tinder that produces a 3"-5" flame for up to 10 minutes which is considerably larger and longer than a flame produced by match or butane lighter. Due to the low flash/ignition temperature of the materials and organic weatherproofing formula we use, the Baddest Bee Fire Fuses are extremely effective at igniting from sparks cast off flint striking tools in wet (and dry) conditions where forest floor tinders are too damp to ignite. Coupling this larger, longer burning flame with a bellowing tool gives users the opportunity to start a fire with wet fuels they wouldn’t normally be able to start.” KnifeCenter site

There are a number of claims there but they are also vague at the same time.

Weatherproof? What does that mean exactly?
They go on to claim that these offer a breezeproof flame.
Considerably larger, stronger and longer burning than a flame put out by a match or lighter.

extremely effective at igniting from sparks cast off of flint striking tools
What classifies as a longer burning flame?
Compared to what? A match? A lighter? A lighter is going to burn for longer than this and it won’t even be close.

Up to 10 minute burn time? (KnifeCenter information)

Pros :
Small form factor
Very low weight
Good internal protection and storage thanks to the container
Easy to open up the fibers and ignite
Odorless
Burn time?

Cons :
The web page for this company doesn’t provide a lot of information about the products they sell and some of the claims sound more like marketing talk than anything else. They don’t state easy to discern information about weight, size, container information nor specific details about the overall burning characteristics of their products.

The company seems to offer products that aren’t offered on their own web site. The smaller 1.75” fuses are sold at KnifeCenter.

Pricey for the amount of fire starters that you receive; there are other wax based fire starter out there that burn for longer, put off a larger flame and are substantially less expensive. Not even talking about making your own…
