The IBNS Military Shelter Gets Even More Interesting - Catoma Tarp Syste...


This shelter system is Different! 
Really Really Different!

Recently I put up a video concerning the Catoma IBNS tent, that was part 1.  This is part 2 and the focus is on the tarp system that Catoma developed to go hand in hand with that bug tent.

They call it the Gopher….why?  It’s a play on words sort of thing; the IBNS is also called the Burrow and this is the Gopher.  

Anyways, the company claims that this tarp was designed to work directly with the IBNS.  They also point out that it can be attached to most off-road vehicles which really is a stretch but hey, whatever.  That’s marketing for you.

In this episode, we will be taking a look at the Gopher tarp and will be seeing just how well that it works with the IBNS tent.

I have no idea why the company would LIE about this outside of trying to push sales.....

I REALLY DISLIKE dishonest outdoor companies!

Numbat Review 

Price : Retail price is $65 – which is $10 more expensive than it was 3 years ago.  These go for $77 on Amazon. You may find a seller who is trying to rip people off on these too, for an example, there is one seller trying to unload these for $120 which is crazy high.  Don’t get ripped off.

Review Pros :

Excellent quality – top notch materials 

Excellent zipper pulls 

The chest rig is very adaptable – lots of pockets and is user adjustable 

Wearing : Some people like to carry the Numbat higher up on the chest, I find that I prefer it a little lower - about mid-Chest level as I’m able to vent heat from the upper chest - This helps with staying a bit cooler in warm conditions.  

Can be used easily with backpacks and doesn’t interfere with the way that the pack carries and I have tested this out with dozens of different packs.

Comfortable

Easy to use, easy to open and easy to access

Easy to put on and take off – TIP : undo one buckle and throw it over your shoulder and then buckle it in.  I’ve seen people try to put it on in other ways – do it any other way and it can be awkward.

Capacity is very good - Can hold a lot - Great size, not too bulky.

Two front stretchy pockets

Weather Resistance 

Speaking of which, the Numbat offers Excellent water resistance.

Excellent solution for Concealed Carry 

You can easily attach to the pack and even to the straps - you have MOLLE on the front cent and bottom - I’ll admit that I have never felt the need to do that.

Because the pack is thin, it can be worn under a jacket if that is what you want to do.  I don’t wear it that way myself but I know some who do.

Opens in the form of a tray

The main compartment has a velcro loop back panel to attach your own pouches or dividers

Shock cord on the bottom so you can attach addition items such as a rolled up poncho - you may not use this feature often, I haven’t but it’s nice to have that attachment point.

Strap keepers on all for points.

Buckles at each corner so you can easily put it on or take it off no matter what your dominant side is

Excellent price 

Cons : 

This is my only Real Con - Sweat 

Smaller Con 1 - Laser Cut Molle 

Smaller Con 2 - Can take some work to adjust to go over larger jackets/layers

Smaller Con 3 - Map Sleeve 

Small Con 4 - Not the best for running

FIDO Tent :

LiteFighter is a company that over the years has impressed me a great deal; not only with their products but with the way that they handle themselves.  If you are curious as to what I mean, I have a number of videos concerning their products and the company.

It’s the FIDO AI 2 person tent system.

What does FIDO mean?

Think about to the old military Pup tents, this is based on a next generation military tent and it’s a play on words…FIDO.

Exceptional construction
Top of the line materials and components 
These packs can take a literal beating and they last forever.  Savotta has videos of them doing all sorts of torture tests on their packs and they take it all with ease.
Adjustable harness system which is rare in military style packs
Very comfortable - the belt hugs the waist perfectly and takes the load off of the shoulders.  The harness system is also very comfortable
This pack is designed to carry heavy loadouts and it does that very, very well.  The heaviest I that I have packed this is 52lbs and it is surprisingly comfortable.
Stable when wearing the pack even with heavy loadouts; the weight is very well controlled and doesn’t swing around crazily. 
Easy to adjust waist belt - pull forward to tighten
Enough pockets for organizing gear
Tons of straps and external loops for attaching gear     
Huge sleeping bag compartment 
Frame does an amazing job of preventing your loadout from sagging
Exceptionally adaptable thanks to all of the PALS webbing and straps 
Ventilation is very good

There is a Multicam version of this product, it is the FOR112.

There are other versions of this blanket including a 3 layer version and a X-Lite version. 

There are also civilian versions of this product that are called shade panels - I will be honest, the FPG site is a mess, it is confusing and the company needs to do a better job of explaining what these products are and how they are different. I’ve noticed that for shade panels, they are often called field blankets and there are other issues which make trying to figure out what you are looking at confusing. 

Features : 
Finding clear information about what Thermashield does isn’t as straight forward as it should be; the links on the FPG don’t work and they don’t actually come out and say what it does which I find to be weird.  

Thermashield according to the claims that I have seen elsewhere online state this;

The most impressive aspect to this material that isn’t made obvious is that it prevents radiant heat from coming through the material so if you set this up as a sun shade, the Thermashield reflects the heat of the sun instead of allowing radiant heat to come through the material like a normal tarp or sun shade.

U.S. Firefighters Forestry Service Cold Weather Sleeping Bag 

What it is : Manufactured for the U.S. Firefighters Forestry Service by Tennier Industries, this is what we call a tapered style sleeping bag with a mummy hood.  This shape gives you the ability to open it up fully with its wrap around zipper to use as a blanket and allow extra room if needed.   It was designed to keep firefighters warm in a variety of temperatures during field fire operations and is also reversible to yellow for safety visibility.  Tennier uses Clo Values and it is estimated this bag to be about 30 degrees.  The manufacturing of the sleeping bag is to military standards and stitched in a way to prevent the migration of the insulations keeping the bag free of cold spots. This sleeping bag is definitely enough to keep you warm and comfortable on your next adventure and serve you during disasters.

I’ve mentioned already that this sleeping bag was built to military specifications and it features a NSN numbers; that stands for NATO Stock Number or National Stove Number - is a 13-digit numeric code, identifying all the 'standardized material items of supply' as they have been recognized by all NATO countries.

What’s the military connection? 

Back in the early 80’s, this bag was adopted by the US Forestry Service - in 1981 it was adopted by the US military and was entered into the NSN federal catalog.  

This sleeping bag is from 1980 and if you can locate the military specific version, it obviously doesn’t feature the same colors but the overall design is the same. 

Some sellers will confuse the military version of this bag with the intermediate bag from the MSS; that isn’t correct.  They are different bags. 

TheSportsmansGuide is a good example of this; that site….half of what they state about their products is flat out wrong.  

They are selling this bag from $130 and that’s crazy high for what this bag is. 

Again, this is not the intermediate bag from the MSS, it doesn’t have the snaps needed to connect to the military system.
