Insane Value, You Won't Believe It - Carinthia Defence 1 Sleeping Bag Re...

The Value of this sleeping bag will impress you!

This is the Carinthia Defence 1 and when it comes to a synthetic sleeping bag, in my opinion this is a no brainer.

The quality is top notch, the temp rating is excellent, it’s a versatile bag that can be added to other Defence bags to create very low temp sleep systems.

Carinthia Defence 1 Sleeping Bag Review

Price : $117 for the Medium, $123 for the Large

Color : Olive

Temp Range : Comfort Range 39F, Extreme 14F

Sizes : Medium and Large sizes

Measurements
Size       Rec. height    Length    Width*    Weight           Comp. size
Medium.  Up to 6' 1"    7' 0.5"    33.5"    2.3 lb            7" x 10"
Large        Up to 6' 7"    7' 6.5"    34.5"    2.64 lb             7" x 11"

*Measured at shoulder height

Materials
Shellproof outer shell - a lightweight, hard-wearing, ripstop reinforced and specially treated polyamide which is both wind and waterproof (1000 mm), yet breathable.

Shelltrans lining - a soft to the skin ripstop reinforced polyamide with excellent moisture-wicking capabilities keeps you comfortable through the night.

Thermoflect, a very thin, very lightweight aluminium material that reflects body heat. Thermoflect raises the sleeping bags heat-retaining capacity by about 11 %.

G-Loft filling - Carinthia's own, in-house "hollow-fibre", made in Austria. Highly compressible, excellent weight-insulation ratio and also moisture resistant, meaning that it will work even under long-term use in damp conditions.

Defence 1 uses single layered, lightweight G-Loft filling. In this lightweight design, the outer shell is loosely attached to the bag.

The G-LOFT Plus filling is quilted to an insulating scrim. As a result, an additional air pocket is formed between the quilted insulation layer and the shell, yet no cold seams can occur.

Features :
Two way zippers
Bag is designed to have enough space in the bottle of the bag for shoe bag or extra clothing
Designed for military purposes but luckily it isn’t so overly built that it can’t be use by civilians.
Zipper Baffle
Mummy Shape

Carinthia
Carinthia is a well-known sleeping bag and existence gear manufacturer. Outside of their homeland Austria they have equipped many European countries, including Scandinavia and our very own Finnish Defence Forces too! Carinthia manufactures their products in Moldova.

My experiences :
Before moving to the pros and cons, I want to share my experiences with this bag;

I have been testing this out for a good part of the spring and summer and to say that I have been impressed is an understatement.

The coldest conditions that I have used this bag are down to 40F which is basically the rating of this bag and I was incredibly comfortable.  With regular clothing for myself, I go even lower temp wise and be comfortable and in the future I will have a followup review discussing the performance in that regards.

Review Pros :
Awesome quality
Impressive price
True Temp Rating
Very warm
Very durable Bag
Fairly lightweight for being a military bag
Fairly compressible with a reasonable stuff size
Excellent military grade materials
Can be used with other Defence sleeping bags to create extremely warm sleep systems.
Smooth zippers

Review Cons :
Obvious : not the smallest or the lightest bag but one should expect this with the bag being designed for military purposes

Summary :
When it comes to a synthetic sleeping bag, in my opinion this sleeping bag is a no brainer.  The quality is top notch, the temp rating is excellent, it’s a versatile bag that can be added to other defence bags to create very low temp sleep systems.

The price is awesome and I can easily recommend it.

Price : $70

Cookset Components - Weight and Capacity :
Entire Kit : 16.7oz
Aluminum Large pot w/ lid : 6.8oz - 1800ml
Aluminum Smaller pot w/ lid : 5.2oz
Smaller pot cozy and lid : 1.7oz - 1300ml - company claims to keep your food 6 times longer

Microfiber Stow bag
Pot Grabber : 1.2oz

Nylon Stow Bag

Resin lids can be used as a cutting board or as a canister stabilizer

Aluminum Pot grabber handle/tongs

Dimensions : 7.5 x 3.6

Review Pros :
Top notch quality Cookset
Excellent design
Versatile - can carry entire kit or scale down if needed
Pot sizes are excellent and allow for single person use or group
Stuff bags for each pot
Cozy works very well
Lightweight
Durable
Handle/tongs work extremely well
Nonslip on pots?
Strainer lids
Lids have hole for grabber
Big enough to hold fuel canister and stove in small pot

Good value when compared to other name brand offerings

Review Cons :
Lacking a pan
Going back to price, I spoke of this as a pro when compared to name brands, the flip side to that is that if you look at nonname brands, Chinese products specifically this Cookset is expensive as you can locate more for less.

Summary :

While there are many excellent Cookset out on the market, this is another that easily receives my approval. It’s a smartly designed Japanese set that’s lightweight, functional, versatile and also adaptable.

Soto is a company that makes some really awesome products, many I have reviewed and there are others that I am currently testing out including a butane lantern and the Windmaster stove. Both products are excellent so far!

Buying This Was a Huge Mistake - NatureHike 60+10L Ultralight Backpack R...

After a great deal of testing it has become clear, this is one of the worst backpacks I have ever tested.  Uncomfortable on a scale that is completely unacceptable.

This should be removed from the market immediately.

NatureHike 60+10L Ultralight Backpack Review

Cost : $90 on Amazon - retail is $110 and that’s on the NH web site & that is the Nylon Version.

Versions : There is a 40+5L version, the 60+5L Nylon materials & there is 60+5L Dyneema version which is more expensive.

Colors : NH Refers to this as black but it is grey to me.  It is also available in Blue

Materials
This version features 420D Nylon, YKK zippers

Weight : 2.56lbs

Dimensions : 26.38 x 10.23 x 7.09 in

Max Loadout Weight : 30.8lbs

Sex : Uni

Review Pros :
Overall quality is good
Frame is very good - uncommon with a pack of this design
Pack has plenty of space but it requires you to pack it high; narrow design
Good strap adjustment capability
Harness pocket is big enough for your phone
Good compression straps on the sides which double as gear retentioners.  You can strap in trekking poles, a tripod and so on easily.
From mess pocket is excellent and can be used to store wet items; jacket, rain fly, tarp, etc.
Rain cover included and it works

Review Cons :
Hip pockets are insanely small - you can get most phones to fit but that’s it. Has to be very flat items.
The Biggest problem for this pack is the shoulder harness and the amount of space between them.  You have 3.25” of space which is simply not wide enough for most people.
My neck is around 5.5” wide and because of that the harness rubs aggressively the sides of my throat and is uncomfortable.  It will rub you raw.
Only comfortable when wearing a sweater or thicker layers.
No torso adjustment and there is no provided information from NH about range this was made for.  Based upon my use, I believe 18” to 20” makes sense but that’s only a rough ballpark - if you are tall or really short, you may find this pack to fit incorrectly.
Harness pocket is not big enough for all water bottles; some simply won’t fit and it will be a very tight fit for small bottles
Sternum strap is LOW and is only adjustable moving downwards.  Terrible design! For me, it sits below my pecks;I don’t know how to best to word this, for women it is very low and sits across their chest & is uncomfortable for every woman I have let try this out.
There is a hydration port but no way to hold a bladder inside of the pack; no sleeve, no hooks.
Water bottle pockets on the sides of the pack can’t be reached easily with the pack on.
Larger individuals will find the waist belt to be small.
Ventilation is merely ok with this pack - hike hard enough & it is warm enough, the mesh will soak in sweat.

Summary :
This has been an interesting product to review & by the way, I purchased it with my own money; Agenda Free All The Way!

This pack has some useful features but features some very limiting design choices.

For an example;
If you have a torso length below 18” or above 20, I would not recommend this pack.

If you have neck wider that 3” I would suggest skipping this pack…which sounds incredibly stupid to say because only a child which this pack wasn’t designed for would have a neck that small.

Weird sternum strap placement can make this pack completely useable and it is going to be impossible to know whether it will work for you or not unless you try it on.  The placement makes the pack fit strangely for some body types.

For many women, the sternum strap is too low & is too uncomfortable.  Larger the chest size

To sum it up, do I recommend this pack?  No I don’t.  It features some of the worst design features I have ever seen & the odds are, it won’t fit you correctly in some form or fashion.

NH needs to pull this product from the market & makes some serious alterations as it simply won’t work for most people.  Yes, the price is good but that means nothing if the pack isn’t comfortable to use.

By the way, the way that NH describes this pack I find irritating;
“Multi-purpose - Lightweight and easy to carry, it is compact and suitable for outdoor/climbing/travel/camping/commuting/business trip/school/sports/gym/hiking/motorcycle/town use/disaster prevention.”

That’s a bunch of bullsh*t and so is this backpack.

NatureHike, this is a complete failure and folks, it isn’t worth your money.

BITTY BIG Q Titanium 450ml Cup with Cutlery Set Review
Agenda Free Link : https://www.amazon.com/Bitty-Big-Titanium-Folding-Everyday/dp/B07VBTVY2Y

Price : $40

—- Includes —-
Storage Bag for Cup -
450ml Cup
Storage Bag for Cutlery -
Foldable Spoon
Foldable Fork
Foldable Knife

—- Weight —-
Full Kit including Storage Bag : 5.4oz
Cup : 2.8oz
Cutlery Set with bag : 2.1oz
Storage Bag : .6oz

Materials :
Titanium and stainless

Measurements : 4” tall x 3” wide

Review Pros :

Very lightweight.
Good quality materials
Fair quality construction
Makes for a good coffee cup

Grab tab is rigid and will stand up for easy lid removal
There is a drain hole

Good storage bag; adequately sized for ease of getting it out and putting it in.

Butterfly handles are comfortable even though they are inconsistent - one swings around rather easily while the other is stiff

Measurement markers -

Review Cons :

While this cup will hold 450ml, that is filled all the way to the top which makes 450ml unrealistic in many situations and uses.

Pricey for a titanium cup and cutlery set -
You can get a Toaks 450ml titanium cup with lid for $25 and a long handled spoon for less than this kit and it would be more functional and cost $4-$5 less. You could save even more money by going with nonname brands.

There is a drain hole but it would have been if there was more than one. Not only for dragining but for the releasing of steam; that is important when boiling water, if you aren’t watching closely, the water will boil, the escaping steam will overwhelm the lid and you can easily have a mess on your hands not to mention there is a potential for getting burned.

The cutlery is just ok in my opinion; because it is having to fit into such a small cup, the overall sizes of each utensil is small and short;
Not suitable for freeze dried meals - you will get your hands covered unless you are removing the meal from the bag into a bowl or plate.
Would like to have seen a spork instead of a spoon and spork; that would make the kit lighter in terms of weight but would make it less expensive.
Locking the handles isn’t the easiest thing to do or to release
Lid doesn’t fit completely with the cutlery inside of the cup

Summary :
To wrap up this review, the question is, would I recommend this to anyone to purchase and the answer is no. While I like the small size of the cup, it works well in conjunction with a larger pot such as a 750ml I don’t care for the utensils.

You can piece together a better kit, one that is more suitable for the average outdoor adventure for less.

This company makes a foldable grill which Susie and I like, unfortunately this misses the mark. Review on the grill is coming up soon.

DAC ALUMINIUM 7001: very lightweight aluminum tent poles (8.7 mm)
roll-top pack bag
....
Forward :

This has been my first experience with Jack Wolfskin and I can tell you that I am in fact impressed for the most part. The Gossamer II isn’t perfect but all in all it is a great tent.

I’ve heard from a handful of viewers from outside of the USA who had very good things to say about JWS but a common complaint was price; everyone stated that outside of the USA, JWS charges premium prices but the quality is excellent.

With Snugpak dropping in quality over the years, this tent really interested me so I bought one and here we are.

In case you don’t know, the Gossamer 1 is a version of the Snugpak Ionosphere tent which I really like.

With the Goassamer II, it is a larger two Persian variant of the Ionosphere.

Review Pros :
Very good quality construction
Excellent materials
Impressively waterproof
Good airflow
Setup is easy and fast
I love the green color
Price is very fair for this tent
Dry line is a nice feature
Lots of space for two people
Good amount of space to change clothes and move around.
Low profile, dark colors make for an excellent stealth camp tent

Review Cons :
It is a heavy tent for being a 2 person
The size of the tent stored is very large and will take a fairly large tent to carry it.
Availability of this tent is limited - it was offered via the company on Amazon but thanks to Covid related limitations, it hasn’t been in stock for a while now and who knows when it will return to US stores. This is also for sale on the jack WS USA web site but is currently sold out.
Can be difficult to seal tent up completely to stop bugs from getting in due to the way that the zippers come together and the material that covers the zippers on the inside of the tent
Zippers get caught frequently on the mesh screen tie ups and will be a source of fiddling

Summary :
To summarize, I really like this tent even though it does have a few flaws. It’s large, heavy and the design of the zippers with the door could be much better but for the money, this is a high quality tent that Ican easily recommend.

The Gossamer II has blown me away with its waterproofness; as I mentioned in the Test Night Episode for this tent, it went through more rain that any tent I have tested and it did so flawlessly.

It’s a gold standard for waterproofing!

ILBE Assault Pack - Updated Review
Agenda Free Link : eBay.com

Weight : 3lbs

Size : 10w x 8d x 19"h., 3 lbs.

Materials :
725 Cordura fabric
YYK

I went back and checked and I paid $25 for mine years ago.

On eBay, these are going for $120 all the way up to $300 which is not even remotely worth it for this pack unless you are a surplus collector and you simply have to have one.

There is a Gen 1 and a Gen 2 version with very little difference. Main the colors and the buckle brand.

I’ve heard this referred to as a “Go to Hell” pack because it’s designed to attach to the outside of the Main Pack and if things go to Hell you can grab your small pack, dump the big one, and make your getaway with your critical gear.

This pack was based upon the Charlie pack which was developed Arc’teryx; The Charlie pack wasn’t available very long and I believe the reason to be this;

It was way too expensive of a pack for how uncomfortable it was.

With the ILBE, it was developed by Arc’teryx and was made by Propper.
You can find on rare occasion the Arc’teryx version of this assault packs and they can be as expensive as $300 or $400!

• MOLLE compatible Pouch Attachment Ladder System (PALS) grid
• Adjustable sternum, waist and quick release shoulder straps
• Hydration system tube exit holes
• Quick release padded shoulder straps
• Padded back with removable plastic panel

The Military Surplus USMC Assault Pack was designed to be attached to the Improved Load Bearing System (ILBE) backpack or carried on shorter missions by the United States Marine Corps.

The Assault Pack has a capacity of 1,500 cubic inches and can handle loads weighing up to 40 pounds.

Constructed from 725 Cordura fabric
Haul handle
Compression Straps

Summary :
Usually I go over the pros and cons and then a summary with my reviews but in this case, I’m going to summarize my thoughts first and then move on to everything else.

Over the years, I have found this to be a pack that I reach for less and less.

First, the pack simply isn’t as comfortable as many other options out there.

Second, ventilation is TERRIBLE.

Third, the price of this pack has reached very high levels which I wouldn’t personally spend.

All in all, for everyday average use, there are better backpacks out there in my opinion and while I like this pack for the military factor, there are better options available that are much more realistically priced.

Pros :
Tough as nails! Very well made.
Very basic pack; no bells, no whistles.
Can carry a lot of weight….
Think of this assault pack like an old truck. It gets the job done but with no luxuries.
Good compression straps which stabilize your loadout well
Can be attached to the main ILBE Rucksack - if you want to connect the two packs, make sure that you have matching generations - a gen 1 assault has to be connected to a 1 ruck, a gen 2 with a gen 2
I like the Marpat camo
Size is good for day hikes - can be used for an overnight trip only if you are going very minimal with your gear.
Expansion possibilities are present thanks to webbing.
Weight isn’t overly bad for this being a military backpack

Cons :
Not comfort for warm weather use - the shoulder straps when this pack is loaded is simply not comfortable.

Back panel is a solid sheet and ventilation is terrible.

Materials will absorb a lot of moisture

Shoulder buckles tend to dig into your ribs

When it is colder and you’re wearing additional layers, this pack is much more comfortable.

Only two pockets make organizing hard….or easy depending on what type of systems that you use. I use kit bags and it’s extremely easy but if you don’t, this could be a con.
Not a large pack but if you need additional space, adding some MOLLE compatible utility pouches is very easy to do.

I mentioned before that I like the Marpat camo but there is a con to this - on the trail it doesn’t matter all that much but camo patterns in public tend to be noticed and there is a negative impression that many people have. The best rule of thumb in life is to go unnoticed and solid color pack makes that possible and more likely.
