As with all products, there are some pros & cons and we’ll go over those now.

Pros :
Comfortable to wear

Low profile

Wears well with sunglasses

brim is large enough to protect from the sun yet angled so it doesn’t catch the wind Unless you look up....

I really like the concept of two different length brim. With a backpack or high back chair just use the short brim in back. Yet in open sunshine spin the hat & have protection on your neck & sufficient brim to cover your face.

Provides overall excellent protection from the sun - face, ears, top of head & neck. The Sun Blade's asymmetrical brim is unique in our test group: it's 4" wide in back, 3" in front, & 2" on either side, and it's reversible back-to-front. This all adds up to a mixed bag in terms of sun protection. On the plus side, 3-4" is relatively wide compared to other models in our test group, & the reversibility means that you can increase protection on your face or your neck depending on where the sun is. On the other hand, the 2" side brims is a bit narrow which makes sense considering the shape of the hat but luckily the side brim is sits rather low and the protection is adequate.

Brims are stiff enough to withstand strong winds - no flopping around like with large wind hats.

Very good breathability on top

Price is reasonable.

Cons :

However the length of the brims in the back made it difficult to look up very much as it would dig into the top of the life jacket.

The back can brush against your pack or shoulders when you look up.

I like the shape of this trip; speaking of shape, this hat is not packable & if you deform it by bending the brims, you will permanently mess this hat up. Consider this if you are traveling, if you have to store this inside of your luggage it could be destroyed.

It's not adjustable and only comes in two sizes, so unless one of those sizes happens to fit you just right, you're going to be wearing a hat that's either too loose or too tight.

Summary :

There are many sun hats out on the market today & this just so happens to be the one that I selected for my desert adventures and I can easily recommend it. I enjoyed wearing it for numerous days including a 20 backpacking adventure throughout the New Mexico Badlands.

It’s comfortable, breathable, offers excellent sun protection & handles strong winds with ease. The price is good, so is the quality & I like the way that it looks. Again, that is subjective and like a pair of sunglasses, one should try it one before purchase.

Again, this hat can not be packed, it can’t be folded & if you travel on a flight you will have to basically wear it or hold it as it can’t be deformed or it could permanently damage the shape of the hat.

Review :

Pros :
Wide Enough to offer excellent protection
Stiff Brim; not floppy.
Continues to wear well even when wet; not waterproof at all but does keep the rain out of your eyes.  You could wax it but if you wax it you lose out on the breathable properties of the G1000
Breathable.
Excellent quality
Strong; the snaps have held up well and Im constantly adjusting this hat based on the changing conditions that we have here in the mountains.


Cons :
The low cut nature of this hat means that it isn’t going to be compatible with all sunglasses.  Depending on the design, it may lift your sunglasses up because the hat is pressing down on the arms.

So far I absolutely love this beanie and have worn in temps down to around 30 degrees f and in high winds.  Did a great job of keeping my head and ears warm and protected.  I have worn it in light rain as well as snow and the natural properties of wool keep my head warm as well.

I love the fact that this beanie is so thin and light.  Often times when it’s getting cold out there is a struggle to find the right head covering for the job.  Either it’s too much or not enough and for temps down into the 20’s this one is perfect especially if I’m moving around.  If you are cold natured and not moving much, you may want something warmer at those temps.  Keep that in mind.

Use : I’ve begun testing this hat out already and I’m impressed just as I was with the Seal Skinz Socks that we showed off previously.  After four night hikes, roughly 45 miles worth of trail time in all sorts of rainy conditions, I can tell you that this hat is waterproof.  I’ve used this in dense fog with light mist, light rain to heavy down pours and stayed 100% dry.

Most of the nights the temps were in the 50’s and it was perfectly comfortable.  When the temps got to the mid 60’s I did notice that my noggin was getting a little hot and that’s because this hat does had a thermal rating of 3.  In other words, it’s meant for that range in between the hottest of days and the coldest and that does seem to be accurate.  In other words it wouldn’t be breathable for the sunniest of days or warm enough for the coldest ones either.

When it comes to noggin protection, I am not a big fan of hoods, I like hats especially if i am with some friends and there is talking involved.

The definitive technical bush or trail hat is soft enough to fold with an adjustable brim also provides excellent sun protection.

The USMC Boonie Hat Review - The Outdoor Gear Review

A boonie hat, also known as a bush hat, is a form of wide-brim hat commonly used by military forces. Its design is similar to a bucket hat but with a stiffer brim. Often a fabric tape band of 'branch loops' is sewn around the crown of the hat. This 'foliage ring' is meant to hold additional vegetation as camouflage. A strap provides stability. The crown may be vented with rivets or mesh panels. Snaps may also be provided with which to fix the brim in the style of an Australian bush hat.

The boonie hat was introduced to the United States Armed Forces during the Vietnam War, when U.S. Army Green Berets began wearing them in the field, along with Australian and Army of the Republic of Vietnam units. These leopard spot or tigerstripe boonie hats were locally procured, the camo cloth was usually salvaged from other uniform items or with the former from a parachute or made up by the tailor.

In 1967, the U.S. Army began issuing boonie hats, as the "Hat, Jungle, with Insect Net", made of cotton and wind-resistant poplin, in olive drab, tigerstripe, and ERDL pattern. It was meant to supplement and replace the patrol and baseball caps that had been in service since World War II. As the U.S. military evolved away from a garrison mentality, the boonie found a permanent place as part of the uniform of all services. The boonie has changed little through the decades since the Vietnam War and was used in the Iraq War and still in the War in Afghanistan as an alternative to the patrol cap. The U.S. military boonie hat has come in a variety of camouflage patterns; the current assortment includes U.S. M81 woodland, three-color desert, UCP, MultiCam, and both desert and woodland versions of MARPAT, as well as the Air Force ABU pattern. The boonie hat is often worn with the wearer's rank insignia pinned to the front, above the branch loops.
