A Close Look at Their Most Advanced Backpack - MAXPEDITION Gyrfalcon


After a decade of being out on the market I decided that today is the day that I'm going to begin testing out the MAXPEDITION Gyrfalcon 36L backpack. 

Interestingly enough, virtually all of the reviews on YT for this pack have been done by preppers; I haven't seen a single video where the individual who was talking about this pack wasn't preparing for WWIII.

Going forward with my testing you are going to see this pack being used in outdoorsy situations rather than apocalyptic ones.

What I have here is the Maxpedition Gyrfalcon - Even to this day this is the most advanced backpack that Maxpedition has made; Yes it does have a rather tactical appearance but at the same time it features traditional design elements that are more similar to hiking and backpacking setups instead of military ones.

Terrible quality.

This Pack Should Be a Wake-up Call To Other Companies - Decathlon Trek 1...


Over the years, here and there I have been posting videos which go over my favorite gear and it dawned on me the other day that I haven’t done a video with that series in a long time.  

Let’s Change that!

This is the Decathlon Trek 100 70L backpack and without a doubt this is one of my favorite backpacks EVER!

Why you may ask?

Great question - I have a lot of reasons why I feel that this pack is so good and I will be going over them in this video. 

To put it simply, for the money, this is one of the best backpacks that I have tested and for value oriented individuals who have a budget around $100, this is the pack that I would easily recommend. 

It has every feature that you can imagine, the harness system is adjustable in ways that it makes even the most advanced of systems look archaic.

Mardingtop 28L Backpack Summary : 
After testing out this product, I must admit I like it a lot.  For the money once you drop all of the marketing bullshit, this is a good budget friendly tactical style system that’s good for a day hike purpose.  

The capacity is small, it will leave you soaked after hiking but it’s comfortable and durable enough as long as you aren’t hard on it.  

When it comes to Mardingtop, I’ve been testing out many of their products and while the larger packs I can’t recommend the smaller ones are actually pretty good. 

The last thing that I have to say is that this pack is a $42 polyester backpack and it should be treated like one.  Keep that in mind and I think this pack will be around for many adventures but if you treat this like a true military pack, a true tactical backpack and you will be sorry.

Review Pros :
- Very good quality and construction
- 10 pockets - lots of organization options.
- Plenty of rigging options - the pack is covered in loops and straps so you can attach to the outside of the bag in many ways. 
- Comfortable enough for a multi-day trip - how comfortable depends on what you are carrying in it.  For loadouts around 35lbs, it excels but does begin to fall behind in terms of comfort when you go beyond that and that is due to the padding on the shoulders.  It is rather thin and soft and doesn’t offer a great deal of support for heavier loadouts. 
- Tons of space
- Easy to load and unload. 
- Ventilation is adequate 
- Slanted water bottle pocket – easy to access and easy to put your water bottle back into.
- Adjustable harness system

Review Cons :
- The price on this pack is a bit high considering the materials used in the construction and the overall design and feature set.  For virtually the same price you can go out and purchase an Osprey Atmos AG 65 on sale and that is a substantially more comfortable pack than this.  

- Outdated design : while this pack has some great features the overall design is a bit outdated.  For an example, the adjustable torso system is slow and cumbersome and there are much better systems out there.

- This pack offers 80L of capacity and for that amount of space, this pack is very heavy!  Most packs in this size range run 4 - 5lbs.  This is 6lbs and the weight is noticeable.

- No dedicated sleeping bag compartment 

- Hip belt pockets are small.

- I spoke of this a bit already but the padding for this pack could be better.  It’s too soft and not not thick enough for heavy loadouts.  For such a large pack, it could be better.

Top of the line materials and components 
These packs can take a literal beating and they last forever.  Savotta has videos of them doing all sorts of torture tests on their packs and they take it all with ease.
Adjustable harness system which is rare in military style packs
Very comfortable - the belt hugs the waist perfectly and takes the load off of the shoulders.  The harness system is also very comfortable
This pack is designed to carry heavy loadouts and it does that very, very well.  The heaviest I that I have packed this is 52lbs and it is surprisingly comfortable.
Stable when wearing the pack even with heavy loadouts; the weight is very well controlled and doesn’t swing around crazily. 
Easy to adjust waist belt - pull forward to tighten
Enough pockets for organizing gear
Tons of straps and external loops for attaching gear     
Huge sleeping bag compartment 
Frame does an amazing job of preventing your loadout from sagging
Exceptionally adaptable thanks to all of the PALS webbing and straps 
Ventilation is very good
