Japanese Silky Nata Hatchet 9.5” - Test and Preview

The Silky Nata 9.5" Hatchet is a Japanese blade which is rather distinguished and renowned!

Part Machete, Part Hatchet, Park Camp Knife!

Agenda Free Link : https://www.lyonstactical.com/products/silky-nata-hatchet-9-5-in-blade?_pos=1&_sid=c0ceb33a1&_ss=r

Lyons Tactical : This review was made possible thanks to Lyon’s Tactical which is an online Tactical & Survival store with over 50k tactical & Survival items;

Check out their selection of bags, bushcraft gear and more.

Price : $148.98

Weight : 2.11 lbs.

The Silky's Nata is part hatchet and part machete.
Blade length: 9.50 in
Overall length: 13.35 in
Blade material: SK-4 high carbon

Blade Thickness, mm : 5.7 mm

Handle material: Rubber, steel

Numerous Sizes : The Nata is available in four blade lengths: 150mm (5.9 inch), 180mm (7.0 inch), 210mm (8.3 inch) and 240mm (9.5 inch)

Two Versions : Single edge and Double edge.  The Single Edge has a silver sheath.

Single Bevel VS Double : Which is better, that really is subjective and maybe in the future I will do a video more specifically about this topic.

I will say that the single bevel is more directed for right handed users so if you are left handed, the double version will be a better tool overall. -single ground (sharpened on one side only), for chopping off small branches, debarking trees and layering hedges

-double ground (sharpened on both sides), for splitting wood.

Silky came about in the early 1900’s; specifically around 1919.

Since then the company has earned a dedicated following with their saws, tools and blades.

The Silky Nata is a unique 'machete' from Japan. The double edge, mono-construction blade is made from a special alloy using traditional Japanese sword steel making methods and is designed to keep its edge longer, even with continual use. The non-slip rubber handle is designed to reduce impact on the hand by up to 60% making the Nata ideal for heavy duty applications. The blade is perfectly weighed to swing smoothly to ensure a very efficient cut. Ideal for de-limbing and clearing brush.

Comes complete with a hard plastic sheath and easy-release belt clip similar to all Silky saws. Excellent quality from Silky - nothing else on the market comes close to this 'machete' in terms of design and build.

The blades are made from a special alloy using traditional Japanese sword steel making methods and is designed to keep its edge longer, even with continual use.

The Genki rubber grip absorbs the shock, the vibrations are hardly transmitted to the hand or arm, making it ideal for heavy duty applications. The blade is perfectly weighted to swing smoothly to ensure a very efficient cut.

These blades are very popular in Japan and from what I understand are staple items with the Japanese Forestry Department.

….

Sheath : The sheath is okay. The blade rattles a bit inside but nice for quick access in the field. I wanted something for limbing trees or cleaning brush and this thing is perfect for that. It is easy in and out though.

I think it's more like a machete that can cut through thicker branches or a good multipurpose hatchet. If you needed to, you could split logs with it in a pinch but you would need to baton. Here's a video of Nata single bevel vs double bevel vs Ontario machete.

Interested in an Ultralight and Ultra Portable Tarp which can be used as an emergency shelter?

This is the RAB Siltarp 1!

Tarp : RAB Siltarp1 Shelter

Agenda Free Tarp Link : https://rab.equipment/us/siltarp-1

Price : $85 retail price

Siltarp 2  : $135 retail

Siltarp 3 : $185.00 retail

You may be able to find these for less on Amazon

Weight Siltarp 1 : 7oz

Weight Siltarp 2 : 14oz

Weight Siltarp 3 : 21oz

Colors : Yellow, Olive Green and Grey

…………….

·       1.5m x 2.4m (5’x 8’) rectangular tarp provides 3.75m2 (40 sq ft) of coverage

·       Ultralight silicone Sil-Coat™ impregnated 30d ripstop Cordura®

·       Versatile tarp can be set up using trekking poles or trees

·       Multiple lightweight webbing loops

·       Corners and center guyline points reinforced with Hypalon

·       Stuff sack included

·       218g / 8oz

….

Review Pros :

Exceptionally lightweight – so light that you can throw it into your pack for just about any reason including a dry place to sit when at camp instead of having to hunker down inside of your tent.

Makes an excellent emergency shelter as long as you have the knowledge to use it correctly – that is a good point to make – Tarps can be excellent shelters but it does take some knowledge to do so correctly especially as weather conditions change.

Quality is excellent – excellent sewing/seams

Stretchy, strong fabric – You wouldn’t think it by looking at it or feeling it (it’s feather-light and semi-transparent), but the fabric is very strong. It’s also easy to get taut.

Easy to pack

Reinforced attachment points – The fabric loop attachment points (not grommets) have stood up to lots of pulling and straining on my part.

Ease to use

Stuff bag is plenty big to easily get the tarp into with guy lines attached and plenty of tent stakes.

Well thought out with plenty of tie off points for virtually any setup

Center rigging point allows for some very unique setups.

Review Cons :

Lightweight and quality come at a cost

Fabric attachments take a while to dry – The attachment points aren’t waterproof. If they’re going into the compression bag wet (as they usually will be) then they’ll be coming out wet.

What I Don't Like - AYADA Gas Stove - Review

Support TOGR with Patreon : https://www.patreon.com/TOGR

Today Luke is reviewing the AYADA Gas Stove which is a very budget friendly canister stove.

Is it worth $20?

Find out now!

Agenda Free Link : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PQGRQ5M

Price : $22

Weight : 9.5oz for the stove alone -  11.5oz with case

Max Support Weight : 20lbs

BTUS : 3,500 watts / 11,942 BTU’s

Pros :

Compact for the size of the stove.

Quality is excellent for the price.

Performance is excellent for the price – can simmer, rocket boil and anywhere in between.

Excellent for boiling water for coffee or slow cooking onions and garlic in a frying pan.

Not A Con - Small cups and pots will get extremely hot as heat comes over the sides; can melted the handle to whatever you put on there.  Works better with larger pots and pans.

Performs well enough in breezing conditions; if windy you will want a wind screen; either make one or bring one. – has an integrated wind screen.

No issues from the ignitor.

Fast boiling times; two liters of water in roughly 2 minutes.  Of course, timing varies on outdoor conditions.

Cons :

Storage box is a pain to open and to close.  Pinching fingers is a real possibility

It isn’t the most stable of stoves; if you are careful you won’t have any issues though – I do wish that the pot support legs jutted out further which would make whatever you put on it more sable.

Summary :

While not the first stove that I grab when it comes to a solo backpacking adventure, it is one that I think about for trips where I am with other people or if I was planning to do a lot of cooking.  The power and adjustability of this stove is excellent.

I haven’t heard of this brand before so there is no telling how reliability will be going into the future as the company doesn’t have much of a track record.  Also, they don’t seem to have a web site so you warranty is basically as long as you can return it to Amazon.  Something to consider.  So far it looks great though and I have had no problems with this stove and I have been testing it out for months now.

The Unusual Mil-Tec Tripod for Alcohol Stoves - Review

Support TOGR with Patreon : https://www.patreon.com/TOGR

Different, definitely different!
In this episode you are going to see a tripod stove stand which is known as the Mil-Tec Tripod.

It's a spirit stove support and you likely haven't seen anything like it before.

Adenda Free Link :  https://www.varusteleka.com/en/product/mil-tec-tripod-for-alcohol-stove/22774

Price : $5 + shipping which is $10 flat to the USA

Weight : 3.4oz (7.1oz with a spirit burner)

Size :  4” high x 3.25” wide x 10” in diameter 5.5” from leg to leg when opened

Materials : Stainless steel

A handy little stand for your Trangia, or Mil-Tec made copy, spirit burner.

Some time back a viewer sent me this stove stand and only recently have I gotten it out to use.  I filmed an adventure with it and had countless people asking about it so here I am today with a video to talk about it and to go over all of the details.

It took me some time to locate this product as I have never seen anything like it in the USA and it turns out, this is a common product in the UK and is made by Mil-tec.  I did some searching and wasn’t able to find it being offered anywhere in the USA so I have included a link to the Varusteleka web page if you are interested in it.

Note : Varusteleka didn’t send this to me.  Mil-tec didn’t send this to me and I could care less if you bought it.  My reviews are agenda free and I’m only here to share my thoughts on products and you can make up your own mind.  No sponsored BS reviews on my channel.

Pros :

Well made

Very solid ; seems far heavier than 3.4oz

Simple and yet functional.

Holds stove into place while traveling

Legs lock into place

Cons :

I have heard that this stand won’t work with vintage Trangia military surplus stoves but I have tried it with multiple modern versions and they all have fit without any issues.

Is designed for larger cups and pots; small cups won’t sit correctly if at all.

The weak point for this stand is the springs which allow for the legs to be locked into place.  They can get hung and stretched.  I have had this happen and used a pair of needle nose pliers to fix it.

Summary :

When it comes to stands for Trangia stoves, this is by far in my opinion anyways one of the most interesting.  Also, it is one of the less expensive of stands that are out on the market.  The only other that I can think of is a Chinese made stand which basically copies an Evernew product; it costs $3.50.

I like the design, I also like the price.  For what it does it’s great but it won’t work with small cups and that is the main point to keep in mind as that may make or break your decision.
