Alps Mountaineering Tipi 2P Tent

What it is : This is a tipi style trekking pole tent from the company known as Alps Mountaineering.  I’m a huge fan of this style of tents, they are a bit uncommon so when I hear that a new one has hit the market, I make sure to check them out.  That’s why we are here today.

Alps Mountaineering is a budget oriented camping gear company; my experiences with the company have been good, not great over the years.  Fair quality, there can be problems from time to time with leaking.

Colors : White and Blue - this is the new look to the company and is featured with all of their tents.

Versions : Just this one, there is only a 2P model

Season : 3 only

Single Wall - The mesh is connected directly to the fly

Non-freestanding - it has to be staked out to be pitched

Measure Dimensions :
Company recommends that with 2 users that they sleep angled in the tent with the users feet towards the point.  From the wall to the point it is 6’4” and from one side to the other it is 7’
Before the taper, it is 4’4”
Center Height : 53”

Pack Size : 16” long x 6.5 wide

Weight : 3lbs 10oz

Materials : Tent fly is 75D 185T polyester with 1500 mm coating resists UV and stays taut

Polyester mesh

Polyester taffeta floor with 3000 mm coating and sealed seams

Aluminum tent stakes are included

YKK Zippers

Retail Price : $150 - I picked it up on Amazon for $112

Pole : No pole is included, you have to use a trekking pole that is at least 51” long

Features According to Company
* Sleeps two people plus gear

• Lightweight design utilizes your trekking pole for support

• Works with any trekking pole 51" or longer (pole not included)

• Top loop allows for hanging the tipi instead of using a trekking pole for support

• Lower corner loops feature 2-point tensioning system with sliding aluminum ring

• Tent skin is 75D 185T polyester with 1500 mm coating resists UV and stays taut

• Tipi design has 360° mesh ventilation protected by the weatherproof overhang

• Two closeable vents are positioned near the peak

• Spacious vestibule and mesh door with #8 zipper

• Polyester taffeta floor with 3000 mm coating and sealed seams

• Includes 7075 aluminum stakes, guy ropes and trekking pole tip cover
…..
My Impressions so far :
Covered in Video -

Weight - the company speaks a lot about how lightweight the tent is but that isn’t really true…it’s missing a pole so you have to add the weight of your trekking pole.

Waterproofness : This is an area that I am very concerned about; I have seen a rather high amount of reports that this tent leaks.

Condensation : With this tent being a single wall shelter, meaning the mesh is connected directly to the fly and there being no separation between the two, condensation is likely going to be very bad with this and if you purchase this product, you will have to be prepared to handle it.  You will need towels and you should be prepared for items to be wet.

Stuff sack is nonsensically small and getting the tent back in it…..is infuriating.  Alps Mountaineering, have you even tested this out….it’s nonsensical.

Aqua Quest Safari Medium Duty 20'x13' Tarp Review

Price : Aqua Quest $214 for the olive drab; on Amazon, it was being sold for $200

Colors : Olive Drab Green, Boulder Camo, Woodland Camo, True Terrain Camo, Forester Green,

Actual Weight with Storage bag : 4lbs 11.4oz

Included : Tarp, Stuff bag

Sizes Available : 10x7, 10x10, 13x10, 15 x 15, and the 20x13

Measurements Unfolded :
20x13’

Measurements Stored :
17”x7”x3”

Materials :
70D ripstop nylon fabric

Dual Silicone & PU coating - 5,000mm hydrostatic rating

Versions : AquaQuest offers a number of different types of 20 x 13’ tarps;

The Defender, the Safari Hybrid and the Guide.
The Defender is the strongest, heaviest and the most expensive.  Also it is the most waterproof with a 20,000mm hydrostatic rating.
The Guide is the lightest weight and the least expensive.
The Safari Hybrid falls in the middle.

Features:
100% Waterproof
Lifetime warranty
70D ripstop nylon fabric
Non-toxic dual Silicone & PU coating
Reinforced stitching
Heat taped seams
Stuff sack included
25 tie out points

My Use : Over the years I have used this tent in all sorts of capacities;

I’ve taken it backpacking and while heavy, it does offer a ton of protection and space for one person or an entire group of people.

I have also used it with my truck; it makes for an awesome awning of sorts - because it is so large it provides a ton of protection.

Review Pros :
Top Notch Quality

Tons of versatility; The large size allows for an exceptional amount of setups. Can be used at a campsite or with your vehicle.

Lots of protection for multiple people and their gear - blocks wind, rain and sun

With my testing, this tarp has been 100% waterproof. AquaQuest claims 5000mm hydrostatic resistance and I have no reason to doubt this based on my experiences.

Tons of loops along the parameter and also along the top and body; all of these loops translate to an endless amount of setups

Excellent stitching; reinforced areas.

Price : This in my opinion is a pro; yes it is expensive but the quality is so good that I consider the value to be excellent. I have large size cheap tarps but the quality is nowhere close to this. Some have ripped. Some leak. Not this one.

Large, good quality storage bag.

The company offers these tarps in 3 different models so you can get the right strength that you need.

Review Cons :
With a large size tarp, come natural issues such as limited locations to set up.  You need space or you will have to get creative.

More difficult setups - a tarp this large can make set ups in the forest difficult.

Heavy – one could argue that it is light for the size but in the end, when you put this in your pack, you will know that it is there. It’s a heavy, large tarp.

Takes up a lot of space inside of your pack

Can be extremely difficult to dry due to the size. You might not think about this before purchasing but it should be considered; the 20x13 is a monster so ask yourself this, if you take it out for a trip and this tarp gets wet, how are you going to dry it? Where are you going to put it? Are you going to string it up to dry?

Summary :
While there is a time and a place for a smaller, lighter weight tarp, I am a big fan of large tarps and if you are looking for a large size tarp, I can easily recommend this product. It‘s pricey but the quality is absolutely excellent.

You get a lifetime warranty with this product and for any trip with the exception of a full on winter storm, this tarp is going to offer you a lot of protection.

AquaQuest is a company that has earned my respect over the years; I’ve used their products in winter storms with winds over 40mph, I’ve used them in violent thunderstorms, out in the forest, with my truck, on and on.

Sea to Summit Aeros Down Inflatable Pillow

What it is : This is a lightweight, inflatable pillow which I purchased back in December of 2021.

Materials : 10-denier nylon top, 20-denier nylon base, Thermoplastic Polyurethane bladder and down.  10D SIL NYLON stuff sack

Dimensions Compressed : 3.2” x 2.6”

Dimensions Inflated : 13.5” x 9.5” x 4.7” thick  (regular size)

Weight : 2.6oz with storage bag - pillow weights 2.4oz

Versions : There is 3 sizes of the Aeros pillow, Regular, Large and Deluxe

There is also a down-less version of this pillow that is even lighter weight

Reg - 13.5”x9.5”4.7”
Large - 16.5”x11”
Deluxe - 23”x15”

Price : $60

Colors : Grey with a white top, green with a white top,

Features :

Lightweight inflatable pillow with a layer of comfortable, quiet down insulation for camping or travel
Multi-function flat air mini valve provides easy inflation, fast deflation and the ability to fine-tune the pressure

Technical fabrics reduce weight, are durable, and will withstand exposure to moisture

Compatible with Sea to Summit camping sleeping mats with PillowLock patches to secure pillow in place
Baffle design reduces migration of down - in other words, it keeps the down in place so that you don’t develop a pocket of down. It’s always spread out

Review Pros :
Very comfortable - feels great on your head and also your face.

Excellent quality - never an issue with leaking

Plenty big especially if you are seeking a balance of weight and comfort.

Multi-function valve is excellent

Easy to inflate
Easy to deflate and roll up

Valve allows for easy adjustment of firmness

Extremely small when compressed
Very, very lightweight

Comparable Price to other name brand camping pillows - with that being said, there are plenty of pillows on the market that are much less expensive.

Review Cons :
If you are a VERY light sleeper, there is a bit of a noise to the down pillow top that you may hear as your reposition.

Not the thickest of pillows but when it comes to a camping pillow, most aren’t all that thick. For myself, I find that with a jacket under the pillow, it sits high enough for me to be comfortable.

Down topper isn’t revolutionary - it’s definitely nice but it doesn’t add a ton of comfort to this pillow.

Summary
For most of my life I have been wadding up a jacket and using that as a pillow.  I can tell you this, this is far FAR more comfortable than that solution and here’s the best news; it adds very little weight to your pack.

Over the years I have used a number of pillows that were comfortable enough but ultimately I leave them behind.

That’s not the case with this pillow; I’ve enjoyed using this pillow and for most trips, this is something that I am going to grab.  It’s very lightweight, comfortable to use and I can easily recommend it.

Who should be interested in this product?  I would say anyone; this is going to be a great addition to any kit and it doesn't matter if you are overlanding or backpacking.

Teton Sports Mountain Ultra Tent Review

What it is : This is a 3 season 1 person tent from the company known as Teton Sports.  This is a budget friendly shelter that has truly impressed me;

INNER TENT WALL MESH: B3 FR Micro Mesh
FLOOR MATERIAL: 150D Polyester Oxford

Colors : Gray and Silver, Red and Yellow

Versions : 1, 2, 3, 4 person variants

Features :
One Door
One vestibule
Overhead pocket

Lifetime warranty
…….
Review Pros :
Top notch quality

Excellent price, especially for the sale price that I picked it up for, $85.

Absolutely waterproof

Very sturdy when staked and guyed out.  I’ve had this in winds around 30 mph and it has never had an issue

Excellent ventilation - body features a ton of mesh

Good quality materials for a budget tent -

Large mesh overhead pocket

Lifetime Warranty - this is huge, if you have an issue, Teton Sports will take care of you and that issue.

I’ve heard from a lot of viewers over the years, those rare few who have issues have always been taken care of.

Tent has numerous vents including one on the door.

Easy setup and break down

Good pack size

Review Cons :
The biggest con that i have for this tent is the size; it is small - so small in fact that everyone is going to be able to use it.

Because of the small size, condensation can form on the inside of the tent body as well as on the fly.  The fly is to be expected but on the tent body is a bit of surprise.  This goes back to the size of the tent; because the inside of the tent is so small, you have fabric close to your body and with the release of moisture from your body as well as heat, condensation can form around you and especially down towards your feet.
One of the vents can’t be addressed when you are inside of the tent
Somewhat heavy but that is to be expected with a budget friendly tent which uses polyester as the main material.

The Tent Stakes aren’t the best but they work in most situations.  These are of a Shepherd’s hook variation and the issues with them is that they bend easily and spin.
I wish the storage bag was a bit bigger; storing your tent in the bag at home where you can easily roll everything is one thing…it’s completely different out in the field.

Funny Amazon Review :
“My wife and I are heavy smokers, we got this tent by saving up our Marlboro cigarette points, the tent is great, the storage pocket holds 3 or 4 packs of cigarettes plus my inhaler.”

Summary :
For the money, I can’t think of a better quality shelters; Teton Sports has really impressed me with the Mountain Ultra; I’ve owned older versions of tent and I am glad to say that I can still recommend this shelter.

It’s waterproof, sturdy in the wind, the quality is top notch and the price for this tent makes it hard to beat.

I have no problem recommending it; way to go Teton Sports.

Stay tuned to my channel for more Teton Sports reviews as I have been working hard for months to test out a number of their products.

OneTigris Scaena Backpacking Tent - Review

Body : 40D silicone Ripstop nylon with 3000mm floor
Poles : 7001 Aluminum

Setup : 6.8’ long x 4.1’ wide x 3.7” tall

5 guy lines
10 tent stakes
Poles
Storage bag

Price : $250

Features

This is a 3 season tent,
2 doors
2 vestibules

Review Pros :
Very unique design - I’ve never seen anything like it before.  The partial fly, the way that the floor pulls out on one side - it’s unique.
Very well made tent for the money.
The quality is very good with no issues being found with the seam taping, the stitching or so on.
Large tent that offers plenty of space for 2 people and their gear. Users can sit up while inside of the tent.
Plenty of pockets
Ventilation is very good in most situations. Lots of mesh.
Condensation is possible in any tent if the conditions are right for it but with that being said, it is well controlled in this tent and has not been an issue during my testing.
Pack size and weight aren’t bad considering the amount of space that the tent offers.
I like the colors of this tent - it looks cool. Earth tones for the win.
Excellent materials - ripstop nylon, aluminum poles - not a delicate polyester.
The Setup and Breakdown of the tent is easy and straightforward and shouldn’t give you any problems.

Review Cons :
Design : While I have not had any leaking from this tent, it is possible due to the funky design.  That is my biggest gripe with this tent; the fly design is strange and in the end, only creates a problem for the user.

With the internal fly, it behaves just as a 4th season tent does; the fabric blocks wind and keeps out with drafts and with a full fly, these panels could be used to control the amount of airflow coming into a tent to a great degree while blocking out falling and blowing moisture.

Leaking : Ok, I mentioned that I haven’t had any leaking and I have had it out in as heavy of rain events that I think anyone would ever camp in but that doesn’t mean that others haven’t had issues and it doesn’t mean that leaking isn’t possible because it is.

While I was testing this tent out, some of my viewers were as well and this is what we have learned together.

The way that you seal up the door on the side of the tent without the fly will ultimately determine whether the tent leaks in calmer conditions.  It’s all about the zippers; if they aren’t seated just right, water can make its way into the tent.

Because of this, it is advised that you get in the tent from the side with the fly if wet weather is possible, that way you can ensure that the zippers are in the right place.

Also - In very windy conditions, water can be blown between the panels and leaking is possible.
The quick to deploy hasty shelter is just about worthless. There is no reason to do it other than a bit of sun protection.  It will not keep moisture out because there is no door on one size.
The single vestibule doesn’t offer all that much space - luckily the tent is larger than your average 2 person tent and makes up for the small vestibule.
Tent stakes are rather small and may need to be replaced depending on the type of soil that you are setting the tent up on.

Summary

In summary, this is a very, very interesting tent from OneTigris and while I love that they are thinking outside of the box, I wish that in this case, the tent featured a full size fly.  That would add true protection to the occupants while providing additional functionality.

With that being said, if used in the correct manner this is going to be a waterproof tent; it’s when the door isn’t zipped shut correctly or if it is extremely windy that you might have some problems.

$110 is Hard to Justify - Helinox Chair One Compared to the Competition

This is the Chair that all of the other companies have copied for years.
The question is, is it worth the high price tag?

How does it compare to the OneTigris Chair?  What about the offerings from Sportneer?

This is Luke's Agenda Free Review of the Helinox Chair One.

Helinox Chair One Agenda Free Review

What it is :
This is a fairly lightweight chair made for camping and backpacking purposes.  Over the years, I have reviewed many chairs that are similar but in this case it is coming from the company known as Helinox.  Why take a look at this chair if other chairs are similar? Good question, you know all of those other foldable chairs that are out on the market?  They are based upon the design of this chair which was originally released in 2012.

Chairs
As I mentioned, Helinox makes a number of chairs and with these, they fall into categories based on weight;
There are three categories;

Ultra Lightweight
Lightweight
And High-backed

The Helinox Chair One falls into the Lightweight category and here are the stats;

SPECIFICATIONS :
Assembled                            Packed
Height :  25.5 in                            3.5 in
Width :  19.5 in                             13.5 in
Depth  :  20 in                                4.5 in
Distance from Ground :               10.5”
Weight : 2lbs 1oz with bag.          2 lbs. 2 oz.

Capacity    320 lb
Warranty    5 years

Colors : Lots of color options including camos;
Multicam, black, coyote brown, tie dye, blue, red, green and so on.

Materials : Aluminum - I couldn’t find specifics online but I believe they have gone primarily with a nylon for the fabric.  Aluminum for the frame.

Price : $110

Comparing The One to the Competition - Go over stats and then talk about rating each for quality - Helinox, OneTigris and then Sportneer

Helinox Chair One : 2lbs 1oz
$110 - 320lbs

Sportneer Folding Chair : 1lb 15oz
$29 - 330lbs

OneTigris Folding Chair (low back version) : 2lbs 8oz - $60 - 330lbs
….
Chair One Pros :
Excellent quality chair - everything feels strong, sturdy and top notch in terms of materials.
Easy to setup but could be easier
Easy enough to break down
Very Comfortable
I like Helinox is offering color options; there is a chair for just about any preference.

Works well inside of a truck when overlanding, inside of a hot tent or around a camp fire
Excellent weight limit
Good height for average height individuals
Good size storage bag, just enough to get the chair in there without much of a struggle.

Cons

Small Con : There are no pull loops to assist with putting the chair together or breaking it down which is a shame.  I’ve made this recommendation before, for an example, with the Sportneer company, I suggested this, they added the assisting loops to their products and it makes a true difference when setting up and breaking them down.

Big Con : The price of this chair is high when you compare it to the competition and that’s going to be an obstacle that is going to be hard to get over. The Sportneer chair while not the coolest in terms of color is basically the same weight, same dimensions, the same materials, the same weight limits but is only $30. $30 compared to $110….

Summary
Many years ago when the Chair One hit the market, there was no competition and Helinox could easily ask whatever price they wanted but now, things are different.  There are plenty of companies who offer basically the same product but at substantially lower prices.

So you have a decision to make; do you buy the more expensive Helinox chair which has the best of materials and best of construction or do you save a lot of money and go with the chair that has slightly lower levels of quality, materials and construction?

I respect the fact that Helinox has come up with this design but after testing out similar products from other companies, it is a hard sell. $110 is a lot for chair when everything does exactly the same thing for less and in some cases, even better.

Sizes : By the way, I mentioned that Helinox has three different categories of chair, within those categories there are also numerous models.  With the Chair One, there is a XL version, a Mini Version, a “Tactical Version” and so on.

Underwood Aggregator 1 Person Trekking Pole Tent

What it is : My buddy Peanut sent this in to see if it peaked my interest and it does; this is a 1 person, trekking pole tent that is fairly lightweight, features a very small form factor and is very inexpensive.

What is the Underwood Aggregator
The name of the company is Underwood Aggregator, that isn’t the name of the tent.  The tent is the Trekking Pole Tent; according to the Amazon listing for this tent, it says the following about the company -

“If you're considering a camping, hiking, or backpacking trip sometime soon, you'll want to ensure you've got a handle on the best outdoor brands. Underwood Aggregator established by the college students mountaineering association in 2010, is a hands-on think tank of imaginative designers, materials experts, and product developers who know what they want, how it will be used, and how to provide the best outdoor gear for campers and mountaineers.”

After digging around a bit on the internet, I learned that this is a company based in China.

Price : $55

Colors : Green and Orange - the company’s calls the orange one yellow for some reasons but the pics show an orange tent

Versions : There is a 2 person version of this tent but the overall design and shape is different.

Materials :
210T polyester with a PU 5000 coating - the company claims that for wet weather regions, this is the one person tent that you will want as it will keep you dry.

Aluminum Short pole

SBS zippers

Weight : 2.5lbs

Measurements Stored : 14'" x 5.5'' x 5.5''

Measurements Setup : Addressed in video

Features - single wall, non freestanding design -
Seams are taped

Includes : 1x storage sack, 1x tent, 12x tent stakes, 5x ropes, 1x short pole.

Aqua Quest Survivor Emergency Tarp - Agenda Free Review

What it is : This is an emergency tarp shelter that is made by a company that is, in my opinion, one of the very best tarp makers out there.

Sizes : 10’ x 10’ or 15’ x 15’

Weight : 1.8lbs

Materials :
70D Nylon Ripstop

Waterproof Ratings : 5,000mm

Colors : Orange Only

Price
10x10 is $115
15x15 is $215

Thoughts on Price - considering the size of this tarp and the materials used, it makes sense and it is fair.  Emergency shelters usually fall into one of two categories; inexpensive single use garbage or expensive.  This is on the high end but it’s certainly not the most expensive.

Review Pros :

Excellent size for adequate protection - with my 30+ years of outdoor experience with tarps, I’ve found that the 10x10 is the perfect size as it's not too big nor too small.  With a rectangle shaped tarp, I personally don’t like to go smaller than 10x8 as it limits setups and protection.

With this tarp, it does an excellent job of protecting the user or users - Protection from all types - rain, wind and snow.

This is a square tarp and you may know this already but most consider the square tarp to be the most versatile when it comes to outdoor uses - you can pitch them in tons of shapes and they are easily adaptable for all weather conditions.

Think of it from a geometry perspective; you are able to create more shapes with a square than you would be able to from a rectangle.  Square is better than long and narrow.

Review Cons
Weight is the only issue that I have with this product - while it is justified considering the materials, I would like to see additional options and materials as there are plenty of people who do not need to be carrying a 70D Nylon tarp - in areas that face extreme weather conditions that sort of materials makes sense.

Talking about conditions here in the mountains, we can easily have wind speeds over 70mph in the winter time here; the highest recorded wind speed has been around 200mph.

That’s in the winter; in the summer time even in an extreme storms winds rarely get over 40mph.

For lesser extreme areas or time of year where emergencies are still possible, a lighter weight product would be appreciated by many including myself.

Minor Con : No guy lines or stakes included - for this price, I think it would be nice.

Point to consider - tarp shelters can be more difficult to setup with little to no prior experience or knowledge.  Luckily one can change that rather easily and in no time one can setup a shelter system that is going to protect them from the elements while keeping them completely dry.

From an emergency perspective, these are more complicated to use but with a little experience you can set up a shelter that is far superior and safer to anything else that is on the market including products such as the Wind Sack or the Bothy Bag.

Summary :
I’ve mentioned this in many videos that when it comes to an emergency shelter, a tarp is my preferred method and that’s the case above and below the tree line.  There is a misconception that tarps can only be setup with trees and that simply isn’t the case.  With a little experience one can easily set up a shelter on balds, on rocks, in the forest, on the beach and so on.

Question : Should you purchase this tarp for emergency use; that’s completely up to you.  With my channel, I share my thoughts and perspectives and I don’t influence.  I’ll explain why I like something or why I don’t and you can make up your own mind.

With that being said, this certainly isn’t the cheapest tarp out there and for many people, they aren’t going to need to spend this much money on one.  With that being said, if you feel the need to carry a product for emergencies in your kit, if you want piece of mind, excellent quality, and a life time warranty, it would be hard to recommend a similar product.
