Hi Luke, I have the German backpack and the ground mat, and you are absolutely right about the comfort of the mat. last winter I did a 3 day expedition and took only the mat as a weight cut although it insulates well the humidity it is surely uncomfortable so I also advise an additional mat to it. Having said that the mat acts as a good cushion when used in the back sleeve of the backpack.
