SOTO Fusion Trek SOD-330 Stove - Preview and First Look

Agenda Free Link : eBay.com or importer

Includes :
Instructions - All in Japanese
Carry Bag
Stove

Materials :
Stainless Head

Weight :
Stove - 6.5oz
Stove and Storage Bag - 6.9oz

Dimensions :
Head : 2.5” wide
Setup : 4” tall x 5.5” wide
Hose - 10.5” long
Folded : 4” tall x 4.5” wide

Output Power : 11,260 BTU’s or 3.3kw

Price : Around $140 but this is going to vary

Versions : There is a SOTO ST-330 stove which runs on butane that is different than this one, from what I understand the SOD-330 which you see here is for higher elevations as it is able to operate in colder conditions. Made for mountaineering, alpine and camping purposes.

Pro Observations :
Large Burner Head
Intergrated Windscreen
Long fuel to stove hose
Good tension on the Adjustor
Large pot supports, going to work very well with large pots and pans. Shouldn’t be an issue even with smaller cups.

Aggressive ridges on the pot supports to help with slipping

Regular will help with low canister pressure and with cold temps so we should have good power in most conditions.

Boil time? 16oz of water -
2:42 seconds with the Soto Wind Master
2:58 MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe stove

Cons Observations :
Doesn’t include an Ignitor

Purchasing :
Let’s talk about purchasing one of these stoves or any other SOTO product. First off, Soto does have products which they offer in the USA but not all that they manufacture is available and once you start looking at their Japanese offerings, they have some really good products.

With this stove, if you want one or any other product from the company, eBay is going to be an excellent source. I’ve personally imported a number of products from here and have had zero products and this is what I do.

I do a search for the product that I am interested in, if I can find it and I like the price I will buy it and await its arrival.

If I can’t find it, I will search for just Soto for an example and find an eBay store that sells such products and then I will send them a message asking if they could get the product for me and put up a listing for me. We arrange the price and all of that and it always worked out very well for me.

Tip : Be polite and courteous; don’t just ask for whatever it is that you are interested in - you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish with a little kindness and you may be equally surprised at what you won’t be able to accomplish without it.

For an example, send me an email that Says “Tell me Best tent.”
Get bent, I won’t waste my time answering it. This is how the world works.

There are also importer services that can be found online but I’m not entirely sure how those work.

Watch This Before Buying / Using a Hammock - Pros and Cons

This episode is all about Hammocks and Luke will be going over the Pros, the Cons, When, Where and Why to use them...also, when not to.

Many know that I primarily used hammocks for over 10 years and while my preference has shifted over to tents now, I have much to share concerning them including the fact that they are prohibited in many areas.

It's New But Is It Different? - OneTigris Foldable Tent Camping Cot - Fi...

OneTigris has been on a role lately with new products including this Camping Cot; is there something special here with this product or is it a copy of other cots that are already on the market?

OneTigris Tent Camping Cot :
Agenda Free Link : https://www.onetigris.com/foldable-camping-cot.html

Price : $160

Colors : Coyote and Black

Materials :
420D Oxford Fabric
7075 Alumunym Alloy

Weight : 8.5lbs

Weight Capacity : 330

Impressions so far :
Quality seems to be excellent
Adjustable height
Very tight laying platform
Side Pockets good size
Storage bag is of a good size
Weight isn’t bad considering the size of this cot. Some cots that are comparable in size are rather heavy with some being over 20lbs. The weight of this cot is virtually the same as the Alps Mountaineering cot that I like so much but this is substantially more adjustable.

Negatives

Setup process is lengthy - it takes time and also some muscle. I have an injured arm and find the setup to be difficult.

Large form factor

Not a unique design - when I saw that OT had brought a cot to the market, I was thinking that the design looked familiar; other companies offer the same product and they are less expensive. In some cases, around $50 less expensive but I will admit, the OneTigris version looks better. Aterpa is one such brands. If weight is important, this brand may be something that you want to check out as it features a different top fabric which is just as strong but is a few pounds lighter.

In a world of copycat products it is a bit disappointing to see that nothing new has been done here with this cot design but with that being said, what is present is makes makes a good quality cot.

This cot is going into testing now and I will be sharing my thoughts and experiences in the future along with adventures with this product.

Never Seen Anything Like It - Military Tent 4 Season Conversion Kit - Li...

This is one of the most genius products I have reviewed in years!

Recently I reviewed the LiteFighter 1 tent and talked about how versatile of a shelter system it is and in this episode I am reviewing the Cold Weather 4 Season Conversion Kit that goes with it.

This is an excellent option for converting a 3 season tent into a 4 season one and it works....it simply works!

LiteFighter 1 – Cold Weather Kit - 4 Season Protection for a 3 Season Tent

Product Purpose :

This is a product that I have been waiting to show off all year and finally it is beginning to get cold enough to use and to begin testing it out. The purpose of this product is to act as an addon for any of the LiteFighter 1 person military tents and with this addon, it converts their 3 season tent to a 4 season tent by adding a layer of rip stop nylon over the top of the existing mesh fabric which holds in hold and block wind from circulation inside of your tent.

While I can’t comment on how effective it is yet I can tell you that if this works as it is meant to, it could be a game changer as far as 3 season tent use within the 4th season.

In the warmer months, you run the tent as-is but when the temps drop, you grab the cold weather kit and you can stay far warmer by holding in some warmer air and by blocking the wind.

At the same time, you still retain all of the ventilation performance of the original tent design.

Agenda Free Link : https://litefighter.com/product/litefighter-1-cold-weather-kit/

Price : $120.18

Weight : 14.5

Materials : 30 Denier water resistant nylon.

Color : Coyote Tan

Measurements : 5 x 5 x 5

Included with the LiteFighter 1 Cold Weather Kit

Wind breaker cold weather inner tent cover.

4 snow/sand anchors designed for filling with snow or sand.

Carry sack.

Review Pros :

Incredibly smart design - seriously folks, this is an excellent option for converting a 3 season tent into a 4 season one. It works because the LiteFighter 1 is a strong tent to begin with; such a product isn’t going to magically turn an ultralight Big Agnes tent into a 4 season monster or anything like that.

Speaking of which, can this be used with other 1 person tents that share in the same general design as the Litefighter 1? That is an excellent question….I don’t know but I will do some experimenting.

It works; this cold weather kit works and it works really well - it does all that Litefighter claimed - it blocks wind, it holds in some warmth and it blocks blowing snow.

I’ve taken this out in heavy snow and had no issues.

I’ve taken this out into strong winds, had no issues.

I’ve taken this out into cold temps and it does hold in warmth while blocking out cold drafts and while releasing moisture. Condensation wasn’t an issue at all.

In my initial preview concerning this product, I spoke of a concern that I had with the sides being blown and having wind come into the tent, in some situations I am sure that it is possible but with my setups in windy conditions this hasn’t been a problem at all.

Quality is excellent

Price is very fair - since I took a look filmed my initial impressions, the price of this system has increased by roughly $20 but with inflation and how poor the economy is with the latest administration, this is to be expected.

Installing is easy enough - but, going to the cons….

Review Cons :

Setup process does take time - it adds roughly 5 minutes to the overall setup of the LiteFighter 1 tent. A positive to that is that once you have it setup, you can break the tent down with the kit on and simple roll it up and the next setup will be much faster.

Summary :
Without a doubt, this is one of the coolest products that I have seen in years; with the majority of outdoor products, they involve slight alterations to existing products but this is different; in many ways it is a game changer - it’s smart, effective and not overly expensive.

I can easily recommend it for your LiteFighter 1 tent system -

Highback OneTigris Chair : Definitely Different!

Highback Chair Agenda Free Link : https://www.onetigris.com/portable-camping-chair-03.html

Regular Chair Agenda Free Link : https://www.onetigris.com/portable-camping-chair.html

Highback Chair Price : $60
Regular Chair Price : $50
Exception, Multicam Regular Size is $60

Highback Chair Colors
: Black and Coyote Brown
Regular Chair Colors : Multicam Black and Coyote Brown

Chair Materials :
600D Polyester Fabric
7075 Aluminum Alloy Frame
Exception - Multicam version uses a 500D Cordura Nylon

Highback Chair Weight : Around 3.16lbs
Regular Chair Weight : Around 2.5lbs (there is some variance depending on color)

Highback Chair Weight Capacity : 330lbs
Regular Chair Weight Capacity : 330lbs

Review Pros :
Excellent quality chair
Easy to setup
Easy to break down
Comfortable
I like that OneTigris is offering color options; camo and Coyote, both i like
Works well inside of a truck when overlanding, inside of a hot tent or around a camp fire
Excellent weight limit
Good height for average height individuals
Larger storage bag; easier to get chair in and out of
Price is excellent; lower than many comparable products

Review Cons :

Side Pockets are worthless - would rather the company remove them from production to save some weight.

For these chairs, I have no real cons to mention other than size; while I have friends who are over 6ft who sit in these with no problem the chair does feel small even to me.

The focus of these chairs is to fit the needs in terms of weight and comfort for a majority of users and for some, they may find that these chairs aren’t a good fit.

Ultimately though, with the new chairs, there isn’t much to complain about; the quality continues to be excellent, the improvements they made are excellent.

There are less expensive chairs on the market but most don’t offer you the same weight limits or color options.

Which do I like?
Which do you like?

Japanese VS America - SOTO Windmaster Vs MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe

In this episode of TOGR, Luke is comparing what many believe to be the Best of the Best when it comes to backpacking stoves.

In one corner, we have the SOTO Windmaster and in the other, we have the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe.

——— Soto Windmaster ————

Price : $65

Weight with 4flex supports : 3.1oz

BTUS : 11000
Includes Ignitor -

Burn Time : Approx 1.5 hours with an 250g gas canister

Dimensions :4” Tall, 5.7” wide

Windscreen
Designed for wind resistance; concave burner head sits close to your pot or cup.

Regulator : Pressure regulator maintains stove's fast boil times even in cold weather & with low fuel.  - While I haven’t tested this stove in conditions below 40F so far, I have used it with a canister that is low on fuel and it performs better than the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe.

——— MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe ————

Price : $70

Weight : 2.9oz

BTUS : 10,400
Includes Ignitor -

Burn Time : Burn time (MSR IsoPro) per 227-g - 60 minutes

Dimensions : 3.5” tall - 3.75” wide

Windscreen : Improves wind resistance and combines with simmer control for excellent cooking versatility; wind-blocking burner lip.

Regulator : Pressure regulator maintains stove's fast boil times even in cold weather & with low fuel. Susie and I have used this stove around the country in a wide variety of conditions; hot, freezing cold, high elevation, low elevation and so on; the regulator works well but in all situations with the exception of low fuel canisters - we’ve had rather poor performance with a canister that is getting close to being empty.

Results

Boil Time of 500ml of Water : Stated in the Video

Thoughts on Size : While the Soto is slightly larger and heavier I feel that the weight and size is justified in that it offers a more stable platform to cook/heat.

Ignitor Thoughts : While no Ignitor is perfect I have had more issues with the MSR Ignitor than the Soto, in fact, I have been in situations where I simply could not get the MSR to ignite.  I’ve never had the Soto not fire up.

Cook : Both stoves in general are awesome for boiling water for meals and for cooking.  You can easily adjust both, you can simmer, you can do what you want.

Adjuster : I have never liked the MSR adjuster; it is very loose and when I first received this stove after buying it, I thought that it may be broken as it was so loose.  A friend of mine has the stove too and his is just as loose.  The Soto adjuster in my opinion is better as there is a bit more resistance to it while not being too stiff.

Size and Weight : There is virtually no difference with these two stoves - the Soto offers wider pot supports which makes for a slightly more stable cooking experience if you are using large pots/pans.

Overall Run Times : While I haven’t thoroughly tested this aspect, overall run times are going to be within the same ballpark based on the BTU rating of each stove and the information which both companies have stated. For 99% of users, they won’t notice a difference in burn times.  For those who analyze every single detail, they might.

Which Stove Would I Choose
I like both stoves but after spending a substantial amount of time with each, I like the Soto better. Again i haven’t tested this stove in cold conditions so I will be updating my review and may even do a cold weather vs episode.

Best Military Tent - LiteFighter 1 Individual Shelter System

Agenda Free Link : https://litefighter.com/product/litefighter-1-individual-shelter-system/

Price : From LiteFighter $334 for Coyote Brown, $346 for OCP Camo - surplus price ranges $100 - $200 on eBay.

Weight : 4lbs 12oz for the entire kit minus the groundsheet

Colors :
Coyote and OCP Camo

Materials :
Fly : 40D Nylon Ripstop 5000mm PU
Body Mesh : 40D Poly Knit Mesh (Permethrin Treated)
Body Floor : 70D Nylon Ripstop 5000mm PU
Poles : Ghost Bone Ballistic Fiber with spider hub and all-weather shock cord. New ballistic fiber pole frames are lighter, stronger, flexible, and most importantly wind resistant.

Old Poles : Aluminum Pressfit w/ All Weather Shock Cord

Measurements :
Packed : 6” x 16”
Setup :

Versions : 1 person and 2

Uses : On the Ground or on a US Military Cot

Setups : In addition to traditional setups with the body and the fly, one can setup the tent with the fly and the groundsheet and leave the body behind

Single door

Freestanding tent with only the door needing to be anchored

Season :
3+ season tent. Because this tent is military grade it has been designed to be stronger than your average backpacking 3 season tent. Taking those points into account and combining this tent with the genius LiteFighter Cold Weather Kit (windbreaker) and you have a robust 4 season shelter system that is capable of handing fairly strong winds and snow loading.

For the worst of winter conditions, a true double wall 4 season shelter would be recommended but for 3 - 4 season hybrid, this tent is incredibly functional.

Review Pros :
One of the Best Bang for the Buck tent systems out on the market today

Military Awesome shelter system
Love the camo and the colors
Excellent quality
Easy to setup and breakdown

As for the tent being waterproof, I have had two versions of this tent; one that I purchased from eBay and one that I got directly from Litefighter. The eBay version stated it was new but I did have some issues with leaking from a single hole above the door; I seam sealed it and the problem was solved. The tent could have been used….you know how eBay can be.

The model that I got from the company hasn’t had any issues and remains exceptionally waterproof even in heavy down pours from thunderstorms.

I’ve had this tent in winds around 40mph with no issues.
Snow loading around 6” with no issues

Ventilation is very good with this tent.

Condensation can develop on any tent and this is no different but the body does pull away from the fly well enough and the ventilation is good enough that it hasn’t been an issue during my year around testing.

The Bug mesh has kept the bugs out

Weight is a good for a 3+ season tent - Yes it is almost 5lbs but you have to remember this is a military product. Nuff said. Complaining about the weight of a military product is like buying a Chrysler and then complaining about it breaking down…..these aspects go hand in hand.

It’s a very versatile system that can be setup in numerous ways.

Price - for a military tent the pricing isn’t bad at all. From the company it is fair and in the form of surplus, it is fairly inexpensive; surplus price ranges $100 - $200 on eBay.

With the cold weather kit, this tent can be made to be even more capable and the use can be extended into the 4th season. It really works well and is one of the smartest products that I have seen in a long time. My review on that is coming up next week.

Review Cons :

Summary :
After testing just about every single US military tent that is available, this is my choice for the best of the best. It features the most civilian of designs while being exceptionally strong and capable.

It’s highly waterproof, very stable in wind and with the cold weather kit, it makes for an excellent 3+ season tent.

For those who like tactical products and for military personnel, this is the tent that I recommend; it is a far better product than anything that predates it. It is currently being utilized by US military forces and can be easily recommended.

Japanese Quality - Soto Windmaster Stove Review

Agenda Free Review : https://www.amazon.com/SOTO-WindMaster-Stove-Micro-Regulator/dp/B07R7BZCB3

Price : $65

Weight with 4flex supports : 3oz

BTUS : 11000

Burn Time : Approx 1.5 hours with an 250g gas canister

Versions :
This is the 4flex version which is in reference to the 4 way pot supports.

There is also a TriFlex version which has 3 pot support legs for smaller cookware

Dimensions : 3.5” Tall, 5.7” wide

Features :
Designed for wind resistance; concave burner head sits close to your pot or cup

Review Pros :
Top notch quality materials
Excellent design
Very lightweight
Small form factor
11000 BTU’s provides incredible performance at my elevation of 6000ft
Easy to adjust - can quick boil or slow cook
Windscreen works well in moderate windy conditions
Very stable stove and pot supports
Good resistance on the adjuster; not too loose, not to tight. Doesn’t feel flimsy.
Excellent regulator which supports a consistent burn throughout the fuel level of the canister.
TriFlex port support can be purchased separately

Review Cons :

Pricey little stove - quality costs money
Igniter doesn’t always work; there has been times where I have had to click 3-4 times before it would catch.

In windy conditions a windscreen would be recommended for efficiency and minimize burn times.

I wish the pot support legs were just a bit more rigid; personal preference.

Unknowns : How well does this stove perform in cold conditions?
I will test that out and will update as needed when it gets cold but I’ve had no issues with running this stove at 40F.

Summary :

First, a thank you goes out to my friend who sent this stove for me to review; I appreciate it brother!

If you have something in mind for me to review, send it on over and we’ll see what happens; I can’t promise to review everything naturally but I’ll do my best.

Soto continues to impress me with their quality, performance and smartly designed products. While not the cheapest canister stove on the market it is at the top of my preferences and I can easily recommend it.

When compared to other high performance stoves, the pocket rocket 2 comes to mind; both are excellent stoves with the Pocket Rocket sounding line a rocket is literally taking off and the Windmaster being substantially quieter.

In the future if you like, I’ll do a VS episode for the two stoves
