Snugpak Scorpion 3 - Preview

Today Luke previews the Snugpak Scorpion 3 Tent!  Inexpensive 4 Season Protection!

http://www.snugpak.com/outdoor/scorpion-3

http://www.amazon.com/Snugpak-92880-Scorpion-Tactical-Shelter/dp/B003U9853C

Price : Retail is $399 but can be picked up on Amazon at the time of filming for $269.95

When you’re spending quality time outdoors, the last thing you need is for the rain and wind to spoil your fun. Scorpion is an expert in this field.

A new addition to the Snugpak range, the Scorpion 3 is a sleek, three person tent, designed and built to fend off those fierce winds that kick up from time to time, and for long term hard use. With its 5000mm PU fly, it can also handle large amounts of rain, making sure you and your gear stay dry.

The Scorpion 3™ is also a Fly First pitch type tent so you can quickly set up the fly and seek shelter from the elements.

• One door and three vents for comfortable air circulation

• Ten internal mesh pockets to keep your kit off the ground creating more available floor space (5 on each side)

• All seams are sealed and taped

• 190t Nylon PU 5000mm groundsheet to ensure the tent stays 100% waterproof (bath tub style)

• Shape / Style 3 person tent

• Flysheet is a lightweight 210t Polyester RipStop with a 5000mm waterproof polyurethane coating

• Inner Tent constructed of 190t Nylon with Polyester Mesh

• 50D Polyester No-See-Um-Mesh Mosquito Net.

• Flame Retardant

• Hanging loop at the head end of the sleeping compartment

• DAC® Featherlite NSL® anodized poles with pressfit connectors

• All DAC® Poles are made from TH72M aluminium

• Alloy Stakes (18 + 2 Spare Stakes)

• Available in Olive Outer with Black Inner only

• Trail Weight - 2.93kgs (Fly, Poles & Inner Tent)

• Pack Weight - 3.4kgs (Fly, Poles, Inner Tent, Stakes, Guy Ropes & Stuff Sack)

For individuals over 6’5 you may want to try this tent out to see if it will work for you.  I had a friend of mine hope in and he fit comfortably at that height but if he was any taller it wouldn’t.

Like most three person tents you can cramp three people in but two will be comfortable.  three will be close.

Great for Stealth camping

Thick material

Sturdy

Solid

Impressive quality

Bathtub floor

Vestibule will keep out the rain

Easy setup

Very warm.

I use a foot print with all of my tents and this is no exception.  That is a personal choice to extend the life of the product.

There are three poles, and each pole is color coded to a small piece of fabric on the end of pole sleeve (2 identical poles with green pole selections to match to two sections of green band, and gray to gray). This tent is a fly first pitch.

The pole sleeves were really reinforced, and I see them lasting a long time as it is a tougher material rubberized type of material.

COLORS AVAILABLE Olive

WEIGHT Trail Weight - 2.93kgs (Fly, Poles & Inner Tent)

Pack Weight - 3.4kgs (Fly, Poles, Inner Tent, Stakes, Guy Ropes & Stuff Sack)

Aqua Quest Defender Tarp - Review

Up for review is what I consider the perfect Bushcraft tarp; the Aqua Quest Defender Tarp!!!

Link : http://www.amazon.com/Aqua-Quest-Defender-Tarp-Waterproof/dp/B004I4EXVG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1445455876&sr=8-2&keywords=aqua+quest+camo+tarp

Price: $130 on the Aqua Quest web site.

$75 on Amazon

Heavy Duty Nylon Material

Extremely Durable

The company likes to describe this as Compact but no this is no compact in the least.

10 x 7 ft Medium

Available in a lot of colors

Camo, Camouflage, Brown, Black, Olive, Tan, Green

Waterproof : Yes

Materials:  70D nylon + Heavy TPU coating + Reinforced stitching + Heat taped seams

Weight : 2lbs 12oz.  Almost 3lbs. The tag on the package is printed incorrectly.

 packed size of 12 x 6 x 2.5 inch,

VERSATILE: With 20 reinforced webbing loops around the perimeter, pole inserts in all four corners, and 1 top center loop for overhead hanging, you've got all angles covered. Set it up in virtually any situation

USA SERVICE & WARRANTY: Aqua Quest is based in the Pacific Northwest, where they have designed and tested waterproof gear since 96. All products are protected by AQ's Two-Year 'No Worries Warranty'. Toll-free customer service Mon-Fri, 10-5 PST, at 1-844-775-7770.

This is what I consider to be the perfect bushcraft tarp.

More attachment points than I have ever seen!  If you are a fan of origami and tarps, this is a dream come true.

Cons:
The quality is excellent, the materials are very strong.  Typically when you have strength, there is weight and this is a heavy tarp.  3lbs for a tarp is heavy especially when a lot of tents these days are approaching the 1lb mark.

Not a great backpacking tarp because of weight.

* The ability to use either AA or CR123a cells allows me to choose the optimum battery for different conditions and usage scenarios.

* The light can be removed from the headband and used separately as an angle light, standing up on its tail end.

Unlubbed threads.  Not anodized

The user interface has 3 constant output levels - the low level is good for close up tasks, and the high provides plenty of light to see what's ahead. The light remembers the last mode used. It also has a momentary burst mode for the times you need the maximum amount of light. The rubber o-rings protect the light from immersion under water, and the metal construction means it won't crack if you accidentally drop it or step on it.

Low

medium

high turbo

I have owned the plastic cased LED headlamps that take multiple AAA batteries and they were a pain in the butt to change batteries and they broke which led me to this purchase. Replacing a battery takes less than a minute with no hinges or clips that could break or come loose.

-Size: 115" x 55"

-Package demissions: 8.5" x 5" x 5”

Eagles Nest JungleNest. There is a noticeable quality difference, but the ENO is a $100 hammock. That this competes at all at a fifth of the price is remarkable. Overall, it seems just as functional, if not quite as nice. If you have doubts about hammocking or don't want to invest a lot of money, this is far from a bad option.

This is the perfect hammock to test the waters with.  Meaning if you are thinking of doing some hammock camping but you’re not sure if it’s really for you, this is a very good place to start.

Yukon Outfitters V1 Freedom Hammock

This is the Yukon Outfitters V1 Freedom Hammock.

Link : http://www.amazon.com/Yukon-Outfitters-Freedom-Double-Hammock/dp/B00PBGA1K2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1445457655&sr=8-1&keywords=yukon+freedom+hammock

Price: $54. on Amazon

$80 on the Yukon Web Site

Made in the USA

Colors: coyote black Drab

Dimensions: 119" L x 60" W

Weight: 10.4 oz.

Weight Capacity: 300 lbs.

Seamless single panel construction

Mil-Spec parachute nylon

Innovative heavy duty 1" nylon loops incorporate double box X stitching for clipping or attaching to tree straps, whoopie slings, or anchor points

Extremely lightweight

Reinforced ends and hems

Made in USA

No Seams

You will need a suspension system, this does not even come with carabiners.

Military grade parachute nylon

I like that it is a seamless design here, not that it matters too much, but if you can eliminate a seam, especially one on which you find yourself lying, it can't be a bad thing.

There is a Version 2 of this hammock called the V2 and it will support up to 500lbs

Cons : does not include the tree straps but at this price, no hammock does that I know of.

No straps.

No ropes and that is disappointing.

Eagles Nest Outfitters Slap Strap, Set of 2 is a good set of straps if you are interested

Kershaw Volt SS Knife - Best Bang for the Buck - Review

You've asked for it and so here it is! The Kershaw Volt SS Stainless Steel Knife review.

$20 on Amazon.  Double the cost on other sites.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES
SpeedSafe assisted opening
Frame lock
Flipper
3-position pocketclip
Steel: 8CR13MOV, bead-blasted finish
Handle: 410, bead-blasted finish
Blade Length: 3.5 in. (8.9 cm)
Closed Length: 4.25 in. (10.8 cm)
Overall Length: 7.75 in. (19.7 cm)
Weight: 4.3 oz. (122 g)

This is a small knife that handles like a big knife.

When it comes to looks, it’s simple.  What I would call minimalistic.  There is no nonsense, nothing superficial.

The thick hollow grind preserves tip strength and rigidity

I love the recessed jumping along the body of the knife.  It’s function and looks awesome.

Locks solid.  Disengages well.

Good pocket clip.

made for the traditional saber grip

When it comes to the flipper, I’m a fan of it.  Quick, easy but not too easy. There is a bit of weight behind it which feels like quality.  Once pressed, it springs open.  That may make it somewhat dangerous to those who are less knowledgable about blades.

Quick but not fast.

This is my current GO TO EDC knife and clearly it has been used.

For what you are getting this blade is insanely affordable.

The 8CR13MoV steel holds a great edge.  Easy to sharpen as well.

Outdoor Research Helium Pants - Review

Months ago I reviewed the Outdoor Research Helium II Jacket and today up for review is the Helium Pants.

…..

Available in two colors : Grey and Black

Prices : $120 on the Outdoor Research site and around $81 on Amazon at the time of filming this video.

Material : 100% Nylon

Features
..............
Ankle Zippers; Fully Seam Taped
Waterproof
Breathable
Lightweight
Fully Seam-Taped
Elastic Waist with Drawcord
Ankle Zippers
Stuffs into Back Zipper Pocket
Fabric: Pertex® Shield+ 2.5L, 100% nylon 30D ripstop
Weight for the Medium size 4.5oz
When folded in it’s own pocket like this, it is 5”x6”

When it comes to most rain pants, they tend to have longer inseams.  These pants have shorter inseams which means better fit….for myself at least.  Some people like longer inseams; it’s a personal preference thing so keep this in mind before purchasing.

These pants are indeed waterproof as I have worn them in some knock down thunderstorms.  Very light weight, great quality, won’t take up much room in your pack and are perfect for spring, summer and fall.  For the winter months I tend to do with more technical laminate materials like Goretex.  In other words, stronger materials that can handle the abrasive nature of ice.

Perfect for those who are looking to cut weight from their loud outs while not sacrificing protection from the rain.

When it comes to cost, $80 is just about right for the materials.  Similar products are around the same range price wise.

British DPM Basha Tarp - Review

Today we are reviewing the British DPM Basha Tarp.  It's a bit heavy but it has all of the bells and whistles that you could want in a tarp.

$40 on ebay a few years ago.

This British DPM Basha/Tarp is superb piece of kit as it lightweight, highly packable and strong.

woodland DPM and latest MTP multicam versions

A lightweight, robust shelter sheet featuring a fully tape-seamed hem and reinforced suspension points and attachment loops. It also has press studs attached so you can attach more than one together making a supremely versatile shelter sheet.

Compact & lightweight
PU Coated Ripstop Polyester
British DPM
16 x suspension points
2 x mosquito net suspension points
Weight: 2lbs 5oz
Measurements:8’3” x 6’11”

Issued to Troops Serving in Iraq and Afghanistan
Lightweight Strong Nylon
Silicone Waterproofing Along Centre Seam

A basha is a really simple but extremely effective shelter and can be put up practically anywhere. Lightweight and easy to pack and carry it is a really handy shelter. I've used one for years and it really does beat a stuffy tent and really will keep you dry in even the hardest of downpours (believe me!!).
